1997 stock air filter housing. 2 questions.
I just finsihed taking apart my stock induction system from the throttle body forward all the way to the filter housing so that i could clean the entire system.
I have 2 questions.
#1. What is the name of the person that designed the stock air box on my 1997 vette.
#2 Where exactly does he live.
I want to personally go to his house and beat him to death with various parts of the air filter housing.
Yes mainly the 2 metal straps.
But the entire design of the air box is a complete and total joke.
Ive never been so disapponted with the fit..form..function and design of anything in my entire life.
There should be a recall,..and an *** whooping.
Cant wait to replace everything from the TB forward. But mainly that stupid god for saken air filter housing!!!
Common sense went all the way out the window on that one.
Ok im done now.
BTW car runs better than ever now that her mouth nose and throat are cleaned.

DID you pop the ENTIRE assembly out and service it on the bench?????
Its secured in the front on TWO metal post that mount in rubber groments.
The straps work better if you secure them in place with some tie wraps:
Once you do this simple MOD, the straps will stay attached a LOT better.

I have to admit that I had the exact same feelings the first time I serviced my air box. That same engineer must get a a LOT of hate mail.
I used the VARARAM to fix all my old air box issues. Couldnt be happier!!!

I re-bent the ends of the straps on mine so they stay more securely attached. If your car was previously owned, the owner may have failed to re-attach the straps correctly when replacing their air filter. It's a common complaint which is easily remedied.
You can even modify the oem air intake box for a better appearance and more air. It'll sound as good as most after market filters, which is what most owners equate to more horsepower, anyway. Best of all, no codes in the DIC which occur with some after market intake assemblies. Actually, best of all is that it's easy and inexpensive to DIY.
Use the oem paper or an after market oil gauze filter. Mine is a Z06 assembly, but the coupe/convertible assemblies can be similarly modified. Yes, I know it's a rare 110v version...

I have opened up our '02 box to breathe better but it doesn't look that good.
What kind of mesh did you use and how is it attached?

The expanded metal is aluminum. It's easily bent to a straight edge or used in a curve. I found it at TARGET, but any office supply usually has it in natural or black. The stuff is used in desk top trays, trash baskets, desk organizers, etc. Find something that will provide you with sufficient material for the opening you create. The three level desk top paper tray worked for me. Cut the material slightly over sized so it will fit tightly down into the opening and surrounding directional vanes. Then secure it with the adhesive of choice. It's a simple project and anyone can do it.
Here's an image of what it looks like underneath. I used a strip of double sided tape to hold it in place while the silicone cured. It's not pretty, but who cares.

All early C5 owners should replace their stock air filter top with an air filter top from a 2002 ZO6.
The early air filters only breath thru 2 small (3/4 to 1 inch) "straws".
The 2002 ZO6 filter top breaths from the sides and a slit at the front.
