My '99 vert started making a whirring noise at the rear of the car recently. I thought it was from the new Nitto 555s that I recently installed, but now I'm thinking maybe not. The noise sounds like I have mud tires on the back and the Nittos supposedly are a fairly quiet tire. When I round a corner the whirring temporarily stops, then when I straighten out it comes right back. I'm thinking maybe it's time for a rearend lube change. (BTW just had a 4-wheel alignment today...no change.)
Yeah, I think you're both right...just changed the fluid to RP Max Gear, did a few figure-eights in the parking lot then drove 25 miles on the highway. Still whirring. I noticed that the whirring goes away only when I take a left turn, so it looks like time to change the left rear bearing!

Pretty easy job BTW.
Thanks for the help!
that's good news...just wondering if you found any play in the hub just before you switched out the wheel bearing? I'm wondering if you can have what feels like a solid assembly yet the bearing needs replacement? reason I ask is I've installed new wheels and tires and I am getting steering wheel vibration at 75 mph even though we have rebalanced and replaced tires/wheels...not sure where else to look except maybe bearings or tie rods...thanks
The old hub assembly had ABSOLUTELY NO PLAY in it prior to replacement. Don't know if you could have a tight bearing causing vibration though. Seems like there would be some play in it. Mine wasn't vibrating at all...just making one heck of a whirring noise.
Hope you get it figured out!

I have the same sounds in my rear with no play but it's loud only when first driving in the morning. After car and rear warms up it goes away??? I was thinking the bearings also....Thanks
