no cure- I sincerely apologize for jumping down your throat like that. I detected a bit of sarcasm in your original post and it hit me the wrong way.
On another note, the Vette has 295 35's on the back and if the speedometer wasn't calibrated to match, wouldn't that make the speed seem lower than it actually is?
no prob QuickSilver97, I am a wiseass. a 295/35-18 tire is half an inch shorter than stock, hence your speedo will be optimistic. ie, you'll always read about 2% higher than you're going. so, for ie, when it reads (on someone else's stock car :) ) 140, you'll be doing 138.
to check your car, find a measured mile, they have em on freeways, usually 5 miles in a row with signs. get a stop watch. at exactly 1 minute per mile, you're doing exactly 60. why someone woulda changed gears is odd. gotta run, later I'll redo the calcs for 3.15 and 2.73 with 295/35's..
You could always verify with a hand held GPS. They're cheap these days (under a hundred bucks). I recently went to a larger tire on my truck and wanted to find out the speedo error, so I just set the cruise on an indicated 70, and checked the GPS...off by about 3.4 miles per hour (actual speed is higher). It's not perfect, but it's pretty damn close.
Phew !  I'm glad you guys came to a peaceful conclusion.
Having gone 140 plus on race tracks many times, I guarantee that 4th gear in a C5 with 3.42 gears is good for only 142 mph with stock size rear tires. At least that's what the telementary was telling me. Peace
QuickSilver,
A higher gear ratio would not change the speedo reading when you hit the rev limiter. The speedo would still be reading around 140 in 4th but the car would actually be going slower.
Next time you go to Corvettes at Carlisle stop by the dyno testing booth. You will see dozens of stock C5s hit the Rev Limiter in 4th gear and if you are near the dyno speed read out you will see 137.5 MPH. Every car with a stock rev limiter setting gets the same speed reading.

Hey there Quicksilver, I believe you were hauling A S S. I also believe you reported exactly how you saw it, without any exageration. When a SC kicks in on a high speed pass it happens REAL quick. I did the same thing a few times.
For all you #s men, how close is this estimate of my speed and RPM on a high speed pass; 170 in fifth at about 5700 RPM. I also have 295/35/18 wheels with 373 gears. I might also add that she was pulling very hard when fear backed me off the floor boards!
As far as the question of speed at RPM vs gear, just do it again at another safe opportunity. If its the same, Fu.. um :D

with 3.73's and 295/35-18 5700 rpm in 5th = 156 mph F A C T
btw - 6250 rpm in 5th w/3.73's and 295/35-18 = 171 mph
No cure, first of all what is your problem? Secondly I said ABOUT 5700 RPM. By your own caculations I would be doing 171 in fifth at 6250 RPM. I first looked at the speedo and saw 170 MPH, let off the gas at the same time I looked over to the Tach, which had probably started to drop off by then from about 6250 RPM to about 5700. My rev limiter is set at 6700.
As far as the fu..um comment, it was not directed at anyone and probably should have been left out. Also notice the post was in the form of a Question on how close my estimate was on RPM vs MPH. As I'm sure you know, at 170 MPH, things are happening pretty quick. At 551.5 SAE corrected RWHP, I believe my car will pull to 200 MPH without a problem.
Your turn Sir,

Some people can go 160 in fourth and some can't. My neighbor can and I have seen him do it. If QS97 says he can I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure he can get there quicker than me.
Maybe this is a little off topic but if you have a MN6 car with 3:73 rear and about 500rwhp, would the car be able to pull above 171mph(which is max in 5:th gear 6250 rpm) in 6th gear ?

No cure, what's eatin' ya man? There's really no need to get pissy about the whole thing. Really.
In a word no. You would have to have 3.42 gearing or smaller at 6250rpm. But if you have 500rwhp, you would probably have a built engine and could therefore increase your rpms to 6800rpm's. New top speed w/ 373 gearing would then be 176 @ 6250 rpms & 191 @ 6800 rpms. The hp will just get you up there faster.
5th gear is faster than 6th gear due to the gear ratios & drag coefficent.
5th gear ratio is .74
6th gear ratio is .5
C5 YA, Thanks for your input but I'm a little bit confused(Probably because of my bad english). What I meant was if I go to 171mph(6250rpm) in 5th gear and up-shift to 6:th gear, will my 500rwhp car be able to continue to pull above 171mph ? (I'm assuming it takes a lot of power to be able to accelerate in 6th gear)
