O.K., so I have decided the route that I am going to take for the next mod. Will be installing 3.42 differential and a Vigilante 2800 stall torque converter. My questions are:
Can I drive the car without any problems while I am waiting to get my powerloader reprogrammed? Am planning on sending it out soon but who knows how long it will take to get it back and as far as I can tell, there really is no programming done for the converter, only the gears. Without the programming, what would happen? Would I start hitting the rev limiter? Is the speedometer going to be off?
So, can someone explain to me what will happen if I do these two mods and don't do the programming change right away? Also, what other options do we have besides the powerloader?
So when you say that the shift points will be off by going to 3.42's without a reprogram, will they be higher or lower than they are now?
They will be the same and that's the potential problem. You will reach the RPM you'd like to shift at at lower road speed with the lower gears and will have to rev higher to hit your shift speed. It may or may not be able to shift through at WOT. The HPP3 is always an interim option for monkeying with the shift points, no help for the slip codes though. I think the 3.15 to 3.42 swap is the only one you can escape programming on, and then only w/o a big converter.
Your shift points are set in mph so with the gear change you will be turning higher rpm of a given speed. You will also bounce off the rev limiter if you stay in WOT in most cases.
