I have a 99 coupe and I think I've got a front wheel bearing going out. It's making a groaning noise that goes away when I unload the rf tire by swerving to the right. First question, does any one know if the bearing are pressed into the hub? I would like to do the job myself but I don't have a hydraulic press. Second question, who makes good wheel bearings? By summers end I hope to be able to hit 200 mph so I won't a good quality part irregardless of the price. Any help would be appreciated.
Both front and rear bearings are the "new" style unit construction that have flanges that are simply bolted to the suspension uprights. Gone are the days when you had either 2 tapered roller bearings or 2 ball bearings that cost less than $10. that would first be pressed into a disk or drum then slipped onto a spindle. The rotating part of the unit bearing has a flange that contains the wheel studs, and the whole thing is sealed. When the units are for the driving wheels, there is an internal spline in the center that is engaged by a mating spline of the drive shaft with a fairly big nut on the outside. Makes a nice package, easy to mount and dismount with wrenches and no seals or grease to mess with. All for $370. each (per Eckler's).
I replaced the the left rear, just as the service manual explains and it took a couple hours (First attempt at changing one) I took my time and it wasn't bad at all.
