After buying my 1998 vette a few months ago from Craig's List, I was impressed but noticed that when accelerating hard the engine would ping. It happened typically above 3000 rpms with the pedal to the floor. I searched the forum for clues as to what the problem could be. I tried sea foam after reading about carbon buildup on higher mileage cars, that didn't change anything. I began to think it was due to the intake and exhaust mods alowing more air into the mix so I thought I needed a tune to make the fuel mixture match the air. After finding out it would cost me $400.00 to tune it, I thought I would try a few other things first. The first thing I tried was checking the plugs. I pulled a plug out and found that it had NGK tr5 v-power plugs. I decided to try replacing them with stock AC Delcos. Woo Hoo that was it. I couldn't believe the difference, It runs like a scalded dog. I guess the previous owner decided to upgrade to crappy plugs.
Seems odd, glad you fixed it though. I would have figured bad gas, carbon or leaner due to an intake.
Maybe they were gapped wrong or jacked up (old). NGK are great plugs to use in these motors. Not considered a downgrade, but don't last as long since they are copper plugs. Most of the high HP guys run them. Been running NGK TR55 or TR6 (one step colder) for 6 years with zero issues.
