I tried the "free fix" on my '04 motor gear... lasted a short time.
I see there are basically two manufactures of metal replacement gears.
"A" sells a hardened aluminum gear that doesn't use the rubber insert.
"B" sells a brass gear with a new rubber insert and a clever stamped steel brace. I don't no that either are vendors.
After ordering the "A" last night, I read more posts and see that some members were experiencing problems with that design. Their thinking is that the rubber insert is necessary to eliminate "lock-up".
Maybe I should have searched more before ordering?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone that has installed either design.
I used the brass/bronze gear it was the same as the original plastic gear it work great and I have not had a problem since, the plastic gear had a small flat spot about 1 inch on it.
You do know that Auto Zone sells a new motor for about $60 and they will replace it if it fails. I installed two of these in a T/A and never had a problem with them.
I have the kit from Rodney Dickman that I never used, $30 plus shipping if you are interested.

I just read that 2 replacement plastic gears go for about 10-13 bucks. MIght not last "forever" but def a lot cheaper than the brass gear kits. I did the B not to long ago. Hard for folks with big hands but i got it done in about an hour. Good liuck. I think the link is in the C5 stickies.
