Default A/C on all the time?

I have a '98 Vert with the automatic climate control. Everytime i turn it on the a/c comes on regardless of temperature position.I can turn driver and passenger desired temperature to full hot and the a/c compressor will still be running. WTF! If i press the a/c button the little light turns off along with the compressor, however i still get no heat. The mode functions (foot, dash, windshield, etc.) all work fine. My display is very dim. I am contemplating replacing the entire unit but would like some feedback first, thank you in advance.

hey, I understand what your are saying, but not quite sure. It sounds like you are getting no heat? Is that the issue? As far a light display, if it is dim there are some threads here or how to repair that, but it sounds like you want heat and not getting it? One other item, do you have any codes on the DIC, on the HVAC area? I am not a expert, but have had to deal with the HVAC issues.

Right, i want heat but im not getting it.

Is it normal for the a/c light and compressor to come on anytime the blower is on?

I haven't checked for codes but will ASAP

I agree...pull the codes and see if that helps...especially before buying a new control unit....which by the way, if its just dim, there is a fix posted here for that like dm said. Do a search as I remember seeing it.

The automatic system is a little weird. NEVER use the "Auto" button.

When you turn it on the first button to hit is MODE.

Select a mode where the defrost (windshield icon) is NOT present. Foot, Face, or Foot/Face.

Now you can touch the A/C button and the A/C will turn off and you will be in heat only.

IOW...The A/C ALWAYS works when defrost or automatic is selected UNLESS the temperture falls below about 35°F. Below that temp the A/C NEVER works.

Remember: MODE 1st.......No windshield icon......heat only

The dimming display is a separate problem and will have to be fixed.

As mentioned, turn off the "Auto" mode by touching the button. Select what you wish for airflow direction and temperature. Now re-memorize the memory for key entry. It keeps track of this stuff for each of the two keys, seperately. Now if you are turning up the heat and not getting any heat, your codes will probably show a bad actuator which will need to be replaced. Another possibility is the vacuum line from the rear of the intake manifold, down to the left behind the battery and going into the firewall down there to the inside and hvac.

The AC light being on during heating is by design. It's in the owners manual. It's taking the moisture out of the warm air per the manual.

Try turning the A/C compressor off then pushing and holding the #1 button on your memory seats. The memory seat settings also remembers the last setting on you climate control. Give it a shot and let me know if it works.

Default lots of codes woohoo! :(

I pulled the codes today and got 7 total! They are:

U1160 H
B0361 H
B0363 H
B0365 H
B0367 H
B0441 H
B0446 H C

I cleared the codes and the last 6 immediately returned. They still had the "History" designation though. I tried resetting the HVAC module a few times just to be sure (via dash buttons) Same thing happens.

The U1160 code has not returned.

Upon resetting the HVAC (via dash buttons) the driver side works as it should, the passenger side blows hot regardless of the **** position.

I appreciate everyone's input, thanks to all.

FYI, The BO446HC is your Right(passenger) side actuator, which is out of range. Just curious, have you replaced the dirvers side actuator? A couple of things to try, and I don't remember all of them so anyone please chirp in on this. Try pulling the fuses ( I don't remember exactly which ones) in the fuse box under the glove box, on the floor panel. It will probably have at list on the cover ( pull the HVAC one, and put back in) Then listen to see if your Right actuator resets. You can also try to disconnect the Neg battery cable to reset things. If all fails, you probably have a bad passenger actuator.
