Default Yet Another Turn Signal Problem

Hi All,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I'm the original owner of a 2000 convertible. First off, many thanks to all of you for your help over the years with my fuel tank sender, "service column lock" grinding headlights and hazard flasher problems. It is oddly comforting to know that so many folks have experienced the same problems.

Anyway, I've been having an issue with my right rear turn signals for some time. Both front and rear left turn signals work fine. The right rear turn signals stay dark, and I get a rapid flash of the right front. The left rear stop lights work normally, as do all of the rear flashers (when they work at all, but I see that is another issue, that I have been working around by punching the hazard switch a few dozen times). The fact that the right rear stop lights work would seem to rule out bulb and grounding problems with the right rear. In fact all the symptoms seem to point to the multi-function switch on the steering column, which is at this moment a somewhat permanent decoration on my kitchen table. I was all set to order a new switch, but I wanted to be sure that was the issue before ordering a non-returnable part from GM Parts Direct ($40 to ship a 10oz part? be real...). According to the wiring diagram here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ts-period.html

It would seem that based on the symptoms, I would not have continuity between the purple and dark green leads on the switch pigtail when the switch is in the right turn position. When I test it, I get 0 resistance when the switch is in the right turn position. When I put the switch in the neutral or left turn position, the purple / dark green circuit goes open as I would expect. I'm no electrician, so what am I missing here?

try a flasher by pass first. there are many post on by passing the hazard flasher.....

if the switch is ohming correctly it will not fix that problem....

also, could be a bad ground for that circuit. make sure the tail light socket does not have corrosion inside.....

Okay - something I might be able to help with since I just worked on mine on Monday!

Try new bulbs first.

Check the pins in the male connector (big blue) that hooks up to the MFS connector - be sure one ain't bent like mine was! :o

Try swapping the micro-relays #38 and #40 in the cabin fuse panel to rule them out. They pull out with some effort.

Clean grounds g101, g102, g103. Easy to do but be carefull removing the nuts so you don't break the stud - then you have to do more work.

I bought a new ACDelco MFS from Autopartstomorrow.com for $149.35 shipped. Got it last week.

If all that doesn't work then it's time to contact ByronHunter to chase down circuit issues. It's pretty straight forward and easy to do.

Good luck and I'll monitor your progress.

you kind of lost me in your last paragraph as clearly I am less of an electrician than you that said, this seems like the same problem I had. I replaced the facotry hazzard switch which did not correct the problem so I replaced the multifunction switch (turn signal, cruise control switch) and everything works as it should. there are a few posts on this and the I **think** the general consensus is that the contacts go bad on the turn signal switch.
hope that helps and good luck
my c5 is a 2000 coupe btw.

OK
1. Right rear signals do not work, correct?
2. Right rear brake lights do work, correct?
3. Right rear hazard lights do work, correct?

That points straight to your multi-function switch. The only difference between 1. and 2. and 3. is you placing the multi-function switch in the right signal position. The purple wire must be getting a proper signal input to flash the other lamps. The dk green wire must connect to a proper lamp circuit to make the brake and hazard work. So, the only spot there can be a failure is in the switch or in the connectors for the switch.

I suggest you hook it up and measure the voltage while signalling right. You should see the pulsing DC voltage at the input on the purple wire and then the same pulsing DC voltage at the output on the dk green wire.

Sometimes, parts fail in odd ways and you removing it and playing with it might have jarred the contacts enough it is making electrical contact again.

Finally, you might have what appears to be a 0ohm connection but it is so fragile that it will fail when current flows. Think what would happen if you had one strand of steel wool bridging the circuit. That strand would measure around 0ohms until you applied current and burnt it open.
