Started my c5 this morning and heard a grinding noise. Investigating I found that the serpentine pulley on the crank had slid back rubbing on the timing chain cover. Does the assembly have to be replaced or can it be repositioned forward on the rubber dampeners? If so how?

Nope, time for replacement, the balancer has separated.
Also, if it were my car, I wouldn't start that engine until a new damper is installed. Others have reported their pulleys flying off (EDIT: perhaps "coming off" would have been a better description) resulting in very expensive collateral damage.

Hmm, you could start with damaging the rack trying to get "passed" it. Then there is the timing cover that it's currently making metal to metal contact with.
The reason I posted the comment was to warn the OP that more damage could result if he starts that engine again. (He likely knew that anyway.) Sorry if my first post seemed too alarmist to you LUCKY. I've revised it.
TPOVETTE,
I have not done this repair yet. However, my Balancer is beginning to wobble so I've been reading most of the HB related posts. Until someone with more experience posts to your thread I'd suggest doing a search of the older threads. There are several techniques mentioned.

Thanks for the reply, never intended on restarting. the older threads all suggested putting the trans in 5th gear on manuals.
There are flywheel locking tools that are probably your best option. There are two versions. One that goes in place of your starter. And one that bolts to the front of your crank pulley and wedges against the frame.
Some just stick a long bolt or punch through a flywheel hole into the block. But there have been reports of damaged/bent flywheels from this method.

I did not take your post as "alarmist" at all......I was hoping you could provide info a balancer flying off....I was looking forward to reading about it.
Hoping for an easier fix, didn't want to pull the steering but looks like I will have to. I don't have an impact driver strong enough to work but thanks.

The starter lock sounds like the best method. Who makes them and where are they sold?
