I recently aquired a 98 convertable and now the airbag light is on.
I went through the codes and got "58-scm - no com" as the only notable thing, I am not sure what this means.
This car had a blower that was removed before I got it and the stock air cleaner assembly reinstalled. Is it possible one of the airbag connectors is near the aircleaner assy and is been bumbed loose?
It is freezing here in my garage here now so I don't rally want to crawl around under the front of the nose unless that is the most likely cause.
I would imagine the SDM is not connected down just below the havc control. Check your fuses first. Is there a more exact code for this module that's reporting?
on a 2000 there is a switch in the glove box to turn off the passenger air bag which will cause the air bag light to come on. not sure if 99 has it but you might want to ck..at work so can not ck the specific year info.
Has HUD been added to your 98? If so, there may have been a cluster change. I thought the 97-98 referred to airbag system as "SRS" and later models refer to them as "SDM"
It could be that the airbag system is fine and that your cluster just doesn't communicate with it.

Switch was added mid 2000. '99 won't have it unless it was installed after.
There is no switch in the glovebox as noted above.
The airbag fuse seems OK and there is an extra connector just over the airbag fuse with 2 fuses in it that is not in the Manual or fuse box lid fuse diagrams. I suppose that is for the added HUD, which is also not mentioned in the 98 manual so it must have been added later.

Yep. The C6 system is reeeeally complex compared to the C5. Two stage air bags, seat position sensors on seat tracks (to determine stage 1 or stage 2 air bag deployment), seatbelt pretensioners (with their own separate pyrotechnics), passenger presence seat sensor. Crazy.

So it is possible the airbag light is on but nothing wrong? Just doesn't seem right to me.
Also it appears there is a a sensor in the front bumper area that may be unplugged by accident as the air cleaner assembly was worked on.

I'll have a closer look.
