I don't know of any tricks, for mine I end up having to remove the entire airbox and the bridge up to the intake manifold. Kind of a pain but I've done it a few times now so it's not that big a deal anymore.

Be sure to use the K&N recharge kit(cleaner and oil). Spray the cleaner on the outside of the filter, let it sit for about 10 minutes then wash with a hose from the inside......this pushes the dirt back out of the filter opposed to pushing it deeper in. Let it air dry, then re-oil and re-install.
I didn't have to take the whole airbox off. All I needed to do was loosen the clamp at the top of the airbox, reach under the car up to the filter and pull it down and out......Seems a lot easier than taking the box off.

Yeah but is your car slammed?
rschiltz - I clean my filter once a year or every 4K miles.....which ever comes first (mine's not a daily driver). ;)
I agree with AlphaKnight34. It is not necessary to remove the whole thing...just unscrew the clamp and reach underneath to pull it out. :yesnod:
I usually clean mine about every 15-20k...this is the recommended from BPP. :flag
97C5ENVY - sorry, but I'm missing the point, what do you mean with "Yeah but is your car slammed" ?
Since my car is slammed (and alot of others are lowered) it makes it REALLY difficult to get up under the front bumper. To give you a better idea, my front scrape guard (the black thingy that hangs down from the front bumper) is only 2.25" off the ground.

ok, gotcha. It's not a problem for me, I have the benefit of being able to use a lift to get under the car. it sounds like I won't have to take the box off, which is what I was hoping for. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like good advice, but hard to quantify. Does K & N still make the oil in the aerosol can? (I still have one about 20 years old - doubt if it still works).

It is hard to describe how much oil to use. With the spray (yes it is still available), I make one quick pass along the length of the pleat. Let the oil wick into the filter for ten to twenty minutes. Then repeat covering any uncoated spots. Uncoated spots should show up white or close to it.
I have used the squeeze bottle also. Same procedure but it seems to wick in a bit slower. Idea is to get a thin even coat of oil on the filter. The red dye helps a great deal.
In past years, prior to MAF's, I did not worry as much about too much oil. I don't think those little bastich wires in our C5 MAF's like to be coated with oil and bet the DIC will tell us so.
