I've only done a couple of clutches but I've always done without it. Just don't tighten the clutch bolts up and use the trans to align things. Then back it out and tighten or just tighten it up by spinning the flywheel/clutch.

Not as easy as you describe when you would be manuvering the complete drive line to accomplish this.

Use the trans, huh? So you've never replaced a clutch in a C5 I take it?

I replaced the slave last April but I didn't mess with the clutch. Still, it looked do-able. Not looking forward to it though. Hopefully it will be someone else's car when it needs one.
