Manual Transmission: "4th Slips into Reverse"
It seems my transmission/gear shift has developed a problem. When I try to shift from 4th gear to 5th gear (around 60 mph or so - at any speed, really), it seems difficult to find 5th gear, and the gear shift wants to (or seems like it wants to) shift into reverse. The tension-pressure (in the tranny, I guess) that guards against the gear shift easily going into reverse (say, when you’re parking) now seems soft, compared to the way it used to feel.
It shifts into reverse too easily.
The gear shift movement from 4th to 5th seems a pretty imprecise now; so, I ended up over shifting once or twice and grinded gears a little as the gear shift tried to over shift into reverse. I've had the car for 4-5 years and never had this problem before. This is a recent development (4 months) that I’ve noticed getting worse, gradually.
2000, C5, 93,000 miles.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what's going wrong?
Gabe
I brought my car to the shop this morning and my mechanic checked out the solenoid -- performed a few tests to make sure it was the problem.
Part is on order (4-5-days); repair should be done in a week or so.
In the meantime, I drive mostly on surface roads to keep from having to shift into 5th gear (and possibly miss it….).
