Noticed a small leak under my C5 Z06 so I took it to the dealership just to get it on a lift to see if we could see something. Looks like a leak between the Trans and differential.
It will cost a LOT! They have to seperate the diff from the tranny. Its most likely 90 weight diff fluid. Some have had good luck cleaning that area very well and applying RTV all the way across where the trans and diff meet. Its a short cut but, it ususlly works and no one will see it.
Check you fiferential fluid level onc you get the leak fixed.
When you say a LOT!! are you referring to dealer prices? I have a good mechanic shop here in San Antonio who I trust. They are not Vette experts but it seems to be a straight forward repair just labor intensive.
Is this a sign of neglect or just a common problem? I see quite a bit on the leaky butt posting but most appear to be a diff issue.
Just do not want to drop the cash and have the issue come about again. GM said it is most likely due to the car having such low miles and not enough driving. I want to get fixed since when I take the car out it is with my bro-in-law and we tend to run hard on the vettes. Just do not want a mechanical failure.
When you separate the diff from the trans, you have to drop the rear cradle. Thats pretty labor intensive regardless who does it. Check the flat rate labor manual and add in the shops labor rate and see if it worth the cost
The seal is nothing more than a single O ring. Yes they can leak. Try tightening the fasteners that secure the rear to the tranny. Other than loosing a small amount of diff fluid and making a mess, it wont hurt anything. Like I stated, some have remedied the issue with some RTV.
Thanks for the ideas. I will for sure try to tighten the bolts. I think I will clean the area really well and then tighten and see if it stops the leak.
