I have read every archive on the subject so far but have more unanswered questions.
Ok. I have Corsa Indy's, TPIS headers and X-Pipe. The sound of the exhaust was mellowed out by the X-pipe. 3000 rpm used to be a sweet sound to my ears. No I have to go almost WOT to get what I want.
I know Cat removal should get back most of my sound. I hope!
I am deciding between using the CL or none at all. Although the CL is high flow, will they still give me a muffled sound? I want a raspy, nasty sound when I hit it. I don't want the CATS to interfere with it. If I can get the same results with the CL as no cats then I'll bite the bullet and do em . It's cheaper than buying o2 sims
Vince I know you deleted the cats. Did you do this after your Indys, X-Pipe and TPIS?
I KNOW exactly what you going through! :yesnod: The fact that the cats are dead weight(30lbs.) and are sooooooo restrictive will make a significant difference in the clarity of the tone and overall sound of the exhaust system. I pulled the cats after the install of the Corsa's x-pipe. Then the TPIS last. The headers made alot of torque, but also a nice "clear" tone to the exhaust.
If your after the clear raspy tone then you will need to pull the cats (all of them) and seal it back up. Also ...VERY IMPORTANT... the x-pipe should be installed just behind the Headers..NOT way back by the h.pipe or replacing the x-pipe. I have BOTH x-pipe AND factory H pipe FWIW.
There are pics of my intire system install on my homepage..:yesnod:
I'm sure you will be happy with the mod. Just find an exhaust tech that's neat and KNOWS how to weld.
Thanks Vince. I gotta stop by and hear that :D I travel to S. Florida a few times a week. May I can swing by next time.
SO the sound difference is obvious? hmmmm I think I know what to do...
Looks like you have the Off Road X Pipe. I currently have the standard X-pipe and my TPIS are welded right to the cat flange. Will this be a conversion nightmare?
Stop by anytime..Shoot me a e-mail and we can meet. Better yet if you want to have Robert of Florida Performance to the conversion here in Fort Lauderdale ...he did mine and he's the best!! He's open Saturdays if you want to schedule an appointment Call him at 954-491-1012.
Just mention my name ...he will knmow what you want:D
This is how I did mine. Instead of paying $120 for an off road x-pipe and $90 for the install, I paid a muffer shop $100 and they removed the cats & welded two straight pipes in there. :D
Man...it is loud now, VERY LOUD. I think I will have to replace the stock H-pipe with a regular x-pipe. Hopefully it will lower the noise level down a little.
Guys without cats - please describe the smell now.......if you have indys, how much louder did the cat delete make them? Would you recommend this mod if I live in Cali, where they are really strict? Thanks.......

I have Indys and it is very, VERY loud now after the cats are deleted. I think it will sound just right after I replace the stock H-pipe with the x-pipe.
The smell at idle is not bad at all, unless you're in an enclosed garage. I can't smell anything during normal cruising or at WOT.
And Vstella is correct, the two cats are really heavy.
Should smell no worse than a typical high performance car from the pre cat era...Like a 66 Vette for example :D
I would not mess around in Ca. Just put the high Flo cats. Either that or Gut your cats but leave em in. All that will happen is you will fail inspection but you won't be fined for not having them...
Is there any power increase without the cats on a non-H&C car? I would do this for sound alone, but I would like to see an actual power increase!

Not much HP increase but torque seems to rise rather sharply. :smash:

Do you or anyone have any numbers to back that up? I would guess nobody *just* removed cats and then dynoed. Probably along with headers, x-pipe, or something else............
I'm looking for anything to justify 'modding' though..........

That describes it pretty accurately. My 72 Chevelle and Vette exhaust's smell simular. The smell does get in the car if your in stop and go traffic, even if the windows are closed. It doesn't bother me at all, but bothers my girlfriend. She's gonna be real happy once that top starts comming off. :jester

I have stock mufflers with the A&A exhaust mod with a offroad X-pipe. Idle has become much deeper and more pronounced. When cruising the car sounds almost stock, but under WOT, it's noticeably louder.
But it's still not loud enough, I should be getting my Borla Stingers very soon... :D
I have purchased stingers but have not installed them yet. I was thinking about removing the cats but I want to keep the stock cats so that I can put them back on if I dont like it. Does anyone know of a bolt on system from the stock headers back that deletes the cats?

Nothing special needed, really. Just have the muffler shop cut off the cats and welded two straight pipes in their place. And if you need to put the cats back, then have them re-welded. Not that big of a deal. :D
I had a Car Sound cat on my 94' Z28 and it let some more sound through than the stock cat but is nothing like gutting it. My buddy has a Firehawk with the same LT1, the same Flowmaster exhaust, BUT he gutted his cat and it REALLY changed the sound. Definitely deeper and a more 'raw' sound...........
