This is what I hear when I am at a stop light. Not all of the time but most of the time. I took it to the dealer twice now and they havn't diagnosed it. So last week I took a tech for a ride and made him listen to it. Made an appointment for today. Called the dealer up to see if they figured it out yet. He said it is coming from the transmission, so pick up your car and we will schedule another appointment when we can set you up with a car. And we will have to pull the tranny out.
Now the questions!!!
What could this be in the tranny that is making this sound?
What is involved with fixing it?
A whole new tranny? or just particular gear?
It sounds like a marble in washing machine and I only hear it while idling because the road/tire noise is too loud to hear it, if it does make the noise at all while moving. And yes I can have my foot on the clutch and in 1st and it sounds the same.
If they do replace the tranny does the clutch have to be replaced also?
Sorry so many questions just  and :mad
I don't even want to get into why it takes Chevy trips to the dealer for a fix :nopity
I posted the same question last week. And all the repsonses I got back where that this is normal. Also it makes alot of noise if you shut it off in neutral with the clutch out. It makes me nervous too because it sounds like :U

It is not the marble in a tin can sound of when you first start moving. I had that sound in my '98 and in my '02 but this is definatley something else. Like something broke and is stuck in there
I had that noise it my 2001 SS after they replaced the transmission. I have no idea what that sound is. It sounds like someone thew a tin can into a metal fan! I traded that car on my 2000 C5. Sorry I couldn't help.

MVP,
There have been some Reverse Lockout Solenoids in the transmissions that have been known to destruct. Could be that is what happened to yours.

Good luck.

Would this mean I couldn't get the car in reverse witout some force? My '98 had a bad reverse selenoid, but it didn't make any noise. It just wouldn't let me in reverse unless I really forced it in. I am not having that problem.
Oh well I guess I jsut have to wait and drive a the loaner Cavalier for a few weeks :mad

MVP,
I don't think that a bad Rev Lock Out Solenoid would normally cause difficulty shifting into reverse. The purpose of it is to keep you from shifting into reverse while the car is moving. Just a bad coil in the solenoid wouldn't cause any noise......what I was referring to above was those cases where the solenoid had become detached inside the tranny and had fragged into pieces. Someone posted some pics once or possibly I saw the pics in a magazine. Maybe someone that has had first hand experience can share more details.
Good luck. Let us know what they determine as the problem of your noisey transmission.
It started out with the marbles getting louder on accelleration, but now I have the noise when at a stop with the clutch out. It seems to only show up when the car gets hot.
I'm cool with the can sound on take off (understand it is just part of the personality of the c5 M6), but I just can't deal with always having to hold the clutch in when stopped to avoid the clanking sound. You can actually feel it in the shifter when sitting at an idle, it really makes the car sound like a heap of junk.
It seems to come and go, so I'm going to sit tight for now and see what MVP finds out.
I looked for the C5-TECH post, but cannot locate it. Please post if you know the location of that thread.

The marbles in a can or "gear rattle" in neutral with the clutch released is caused by the mainshaft in the trans rotating with no load apon it.Because the trans is rearward, when you release the clutch (even in neutral) the drive shaft and trans mainshaft are turning (free wheeling). When you press in the clutch, the drive shaft and trans mainshaft stop rotating, stopping the noise...The manual trans uses ATF which when hot is thinner than water and has poor noise dampening quality compared to gear oil...
You may also hear a "clank" noise when releasing the clutch rapidly in neutral. This is simply caused by the clutch engaging the stationary drive shaft...
It all makes sense now. I've noticed the noise pretty much goes away when the car is cold, and stays away when I'm not in constant stop and go traffic.
Now, if we could just solve this traffic problem down here everything would be fine.
I just called the dealer and he said it was a cracked flywheel! They put a new one and but they still have to put the transmission and lower subframe  back in so it will be another day or so!!
