I added the Euro Tail lights. I have never heard of the problem you describe with the 3rd brake light.
I have regular bulbs in the red part, and RED LED's in the clear part. That way when the car is off you don't see a colored bulb in there. I also added Switch back LED's to my DRL's.
I had to get a Hyper Flash harness because my car detected a loss of resistance in the circuit. It thought one of my bulbs was blown, and flashing at 2x speed is an indicator to the driver that a bulb is out.

The harness actually replaces the flasher with one that works.
You can DIY too for <$10.
The other option is to use resistors with LED's but then you have to hack resistors into the harness for each bulb. It's an ugly fix and prone to failure.
The switchback is cool. I've actually been flagged down before and asked about them.
