I have a 2000 c5 coupe 6 speed. When I place the car in gear, I can move the shifter left and right. It should not move once it is in gear correct. Figured I'd ask here first before I take out the radio console and see what is going on down there.
No you shouldn't have any sloppy play, side to side.
The bolts (3) that hold the shifter in place could be loose. There have been reports of certain brand 2 pc shifter shafts that have broken or loose bolts.
You really need to get down in there & take a look see.
Good luck.

I figured something was up. It is a stock shifter. Sounded like you were referring to an unnamed after market brand with the two piece shifter. I will get in there tomorrow and take a look. Thanks
update. With the shifter in 1, 3, or 5 the shifter is solid (no movement right and left). When the shifter is in 2, 4, 6 I can move it left and right. The three bolts are all tight on the shifter. I was thinking maybe an adjustment is needed?
Problem Solved: The torx that tightens the coupler around the shaft was loose (hehe, dirty). I added some locktite and tightened it up. I initially thought the three bolts were tight because I checked them by hand and they did not move. I was wrong. The shaft was able to spin inside that coupler when the shifter was in gear.
Bill, I assumed bummble was talking about the three torx bolts. The four that actually mount the shifter to the box were tight. Good looking out though.
