Default 99 Vette Gas cap issue

Hi everyone,

I just got my first vette and just joined the forum. It's nice to be here.

Anyway, I have a question about the gas cap on my 99 coupe.

When I first got the car a few months ago, the cap would stick to the inside of the fuel door while I filled up the gas tank, because both the cap and inside fuel door were magnetic.

But as of last month, it seems that the cap's magnetism has been reversed, and the magnents between the inside of the door and the cap actually push each other away.

Did a piece fall off without me noticing? Has anyone else heard of this?

Thanks!

-John

The outside of mine is plastic, too, but the inside is metal i think. Anyways, it used to stick to the fuel door but is now repelled by it via magnetic force.

Could be. Just curious....have you ever owned(or used a car), that had a stock magnetic gas cap?

I haven't, but My uncle's Mercedes has a similar feature. I think the purpose is so that the cap doesn't hang and scratch the paint becasue it is tethered.

At least on my car, the gas door has slots to hold the gas cap while fueling.

Mine has a black plastic cap-holder attached to the inside of the door.

Some have a cap holder and others have a hook that you hang the tether over. If I remember correctly my 97 had a cap with a tether with a cap holder on the door and the 03 just had the hook. If a car has magnetic cap holder somebody must have added a magnet to either the cap or the door and a piece of metal to the opposite piece.

Please post a picture of the magnet. I bet if you reverse the cap rotation 180 degrees, it will stick It has to be some sort of aftermarket add on because Ive owned several C5s and NONE ever had magnetic cap holders. They were however held with a lanyard.
