Ok here is the deal I just pick up another 98 vette with 180k on her. I am proud of her she drives very nicely but the ignition cylinder will not lock the key inside when started. I am about to order ignition cylinder, but yesterday I ask my son to move the vettes around and he put the wrong key in the wrong car. Now the new addition wont start nor will the seats move. Now all the dash lights come on but I dont hear the fuel pump starting up either. I have yet to pull codes but I think it has gone into protection or something since the wrong key was inserted. Can you all please give me some insight on this please. What parts should I order, can I diy it to fix it, or do I just need to take her to the stealership?
As mentioned your GM key has a resistance style security "pellet" built into the key--- more than likey you damaged the reading part of the system in your ignition switch---You can get dulpicate keys from GM at a dealer---You just need to take them your registration or pink slip when you take it in to prove ownership and they will make you a one--It's not cheap though I think around $50-75---
yeah I might as well get a whole new cylinder and key for that amount because again the cylinder doesnt lock at all. They sell the whole piece on Ebay for a fair price, has anyone had any experiance with changing this piece. If so, your insight is definately invaluble right now!
If you get a new lock cylinder, you will need to have a lock smith re-key it to your OEM Key so you will not have to have a key for the doors and one for the ignition.
