Default Standard Exhaust vs. Catback

I have a 2000, vert which was just purchased in Oct, 2010. When being sold to me, the sales rep told me that the original exhaust had been replaced with something better. However, I don't put much faith in his comments.

How do I know if it's the original system from Chevy and if it is, how will a catback system improve performance.

I do understand the reason for installing a xover pipe. Looking at one from MagnaFlow

Thank you.

The exhaust note should give it away, but visual inspection will confirm. There are many different types. Post pics, and we can tell you what it is.

Oh lord people, reducing backpressure will increase horsepower. Now the claims from manufacturers of "XX" horsepower may be a little high, but you will gain horsepower. Increased sound is not an indicator of horsepower gained though, it's a matter of flow.

X-pipes have been known to show a couple horsepower gain, but it seems a lot of guys like them because they help eliminate the "motorboat" sound and reduce the decel popping sound.

If you are not concerned with increased sound and are not looking to gain power or have the PCM tuned then the stock exhaust would probably be a good choice.

congrats on the recent Vette, have fun

doing just an x-pipe is not really worth the time and money

but doing LTs, High flow cats, x-pipe and low restriction mufflers, a CAI and a dyno tune. Then YES

bontrager,

Congrats on the purchase. If you want to post or email me some photos of the system on the car I will let you know if it is OE or aftermarket and try to determine who's it is if it is not stock.

There are a few things to be gained from an aftermarket exhaust. The first benefit will be sound. Depending on what you are looking for determines which system will best fit you. Our systems range anywhere from just slightly louder than stock with the Rt.66 to the Bullet which is one of the most aggressive systems on the market. The PRT and Fusion will fall in between these.

The second advantage from a system is performance. I know some people will say that you don't get any however we spend many hours developing exhaust systems and if we can't make some additional power we didn't succeed. We have an in house chassis dyno and you can expect to see increases ranging from 10-18 horsepower and ft-lbs of torque over stock on an otherwise stock depending on which system you choose. These numbers have been backed up by customers as well.

The final advantage of an aftermarket exhaust is appearance. Depending on the system we offer as many as 4 different tip styles to choose from plus we fully polish the mufflers and tips to a mirror like finish. When we develop a system on any vehicle we must have an increase in performance, a nicer sound and finally a better look. We don't put a system into production until we have all three of these.

The x-pipe is more of a sound thing vs power. Now you will see a couple more hp with the x-pipe over the stock H-pipe but nothing noticeable seat of the pants. What the x-pipe will do is smoothen out the exhaust pulses for a cleaner exhaust note. It will also help reduce some of the motor boat sound the C5 is known for and finally will help reduce some of the deceleration popping.

I hope this sheds a little light on the subject. We have much more information on the different systems we offer on our web site www.bbexhaust.com and don't hesitate to contact us directly in you have any questions.
