I am experiencing some issues with my active handling. Driving down the Interstate, it has been activating from time to time. The road surface is smooth and dry. The car drives perfectly straight, but will make small jerks with the steering wheel when the active handling kicks in. The DIC is not showing any codes at all, and no warning lights are on. The car is a completely stock 03 coupe.
100% Check your alignment. If the wheel is off center when your going straight, the car thinks the sensor is bad. Check that alignment and make sure that your steering wheel is dead nuts centered when your going straight down a flat level road with minimal crown!!
I am going to take it in on Saturday morning to have the alignment checked. Everything seems straight, but better to have it checked by professionals and their machines. Hopefully this will fix the problem, not to mention cheaper too.
I have had this same problem constantly for the last year. AH comes on every 10 minutes or so. I have put the car in the shop repeatedly for this problem and no one has been able to do anything about. Had alignment done and it didn't fix the problem. This week had the steering position sensor replaced for $650.00 and the problem has still not been resolved. Hope you are able to detect the problem and you have better luck than myself.
My centerline line on streeing wheel has been off for mouths.Going straight down the road my streeing wheel is at 11 o'clock, but just yesterday i got SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING code c1286 is this connected why now?
Steering wheel that is NOT centered may or may not cause issues with EBTCM operation. Normally it will cause a lot of AH warm up messages but, it can cause drivability issues. That’s the FIRST place to start and eliminate that issue.
Reading the DTCs as soon as you have ANY EBTCM issues is very important. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF as that will reset the module and some of the active DTCs will reset and go away.
When you have AH driving on a normal straight dry road, the EBTCM is either :
- Getting false or in accurate signals from one or more of the sensors causing brake pulsations to correct for it, (i.e. steering wheel off center injecting false steering correction when you trying to go STRAIGHT.
- Damaged or defective SWPS. If the SWPS is not working correctly, it will give false signals or a DTC.
- WSS errors.
- YAW or accelerometer errors or issues.
Try to read the DIC and capture the DTCs generated as soon as you can when the issues happens or is happening.
I still have not had a chance to get my alignment checked, but I haven't had the issue every day either. It seems to pop up maybe once every two weeks now. One thing I have noticed is that my rear tires are getting pretty worn, so I am thinking that may have something to do with it. The rear grip may not be there as much as it should. Like I said, this is just a thought.
Okay, so I spoke too soon! I knew better than to post anything else on this subject.
On my way home today, the active handling kicked in, jerked my steering wheel, and the service vehicle soon information popped up on the screen. So, as soon as I get home, I check the codes, and find the same code. I checked them while the car was parked and still running, to make sure the ignition cycling didn't do anything.
Now, get this... when I reset the code, with the engine running, I swear I heard what sounded like a mechanical motor disengage from somewhere under the hood. I don't remember hearing this before. Any thoughts?
i get the 1287 garbage once a day... along with the service active handling... blah blah blah. i had an alignment done... and im not forking out 650 bucks for a new sensor. i just live with it...

What you probably heard was the BPMV motor turning on cycling the brake fluid at the bpmv/ebtcm

You may not. I won't preach about yours and others safety but the sensor is $80. DIY or dealership labor is ~$250.
I had the alignment checked today, and everything is fine with that. If there were issues with the steering position sensor, would it malfunction every time I drive the car? It seems to happen just every so often right now.
