This is my first chance to join the forum as a new member. I've been reading comments for a while now and have finally decided to join in. Here's my question:
I was attempting to change my oil last night and discovered I could not get the car up on my ramps. I tried placing some wood under the ramp to change its angle, but to no avail.
Does anyone on the Forum know what make of car ramps will work with the C5? Everyone's help would be much appreciated.
1. Some mention that they have a problem with the ramps slipping as you drive up. Just put an old towel halfway under each ramp and allow the rest to stretch out from the incline side on the ground. As the wheel drive over the towel and the weight transfers to the ramp the towel keep the ramp from slipping away.
2. If you drive up and hear the rubber dam scrapping this is not a problem. If the noise bothers you, drive up on wooden boards first to ease into the incline.
Wow! Many, many thanks to everyone for the tips and suggestions!!! I could tell by reading many of the posts here that it was a good bunch of people.... YOUR RESPONSES ONLY CONFRIMED FOR ME!!!
Someone mentioned the need to jack up the back, will a floor jack fit under the back once the front is on ramps?? Where would I want to position the jack to avoid damaging anything?
There is also a set of instructions on http://www.mustangworld.com for building a set of ramps. I made a set according to those and they work very well.
Thanks for the WELCOME and all the terrific replies!! I had a 5.0 Mustang for a LONG, LONG time with several simple bolt-on mods (13.65 @ 102 mph spinning through 2 gears, greasy track), I entitled myself "dads01dream" as this car was my father's before he passed away last summer. TERRIBLE LOSS, he was simply too young! The Vette was his 36 year ambition, I'm going to continue carrying the flame.
Anyhow, I've been on the sidelines for a while, looking for good mods for the C5. I just missed going to the Corvette Challenge in Englishtown, NJ., but hope to be there this May. Would love to get a "baseline" before the mods start, but HECK IT'S SPRINGTIME!!! I'm ready to start wrenching. :D
FYI to everyone, my wife picked up the Rhino ramps this afternoon. I simply can't wait to build my own ramps and I didn't want to keep driving the car (DIC says to change it). Can't believe I've been missing out on all this great weather laterly! Thankfully this is the car's 3rd. oil change in only 6,500 miles, I drive it hard when the weather's nice.... No rain, heck I don't even wash the thing with soap and water! hahahaaa
Another question: Do you have to jack up the car in the back when changing the oil? If so, where should I place the jack?
Well, I've spouted off long enough. TIA to everyone for your help!
Jack up the back with a floor jack positioned on the rear cross member. Make sure the jack goes across both of the aluminum webs. Jack it up to level or a litle more for the oil change.
Whelp, I used the Rhino ramps and they worked.... BUT .... I must be a little too big in the chest cavity because sliding under there was TOUGH!!! I think over the weekend I'm going to try and make my own ramps, could REALLY use the added clearance for future work under there.
