I replaced the entire shifter assembly, including the shifter box, in my '04 Z with the assembly from an '08 C6Z. Pretty simple to do. I like it a lot better. The shifter shaft on the C6 shifters is also shorter than the C5 shifters making it feel like a shorter throw. I like everything about the C6 shifter much better than the C5 especially the shifter know which I think looks much better and definitely feels better in your hand. I used my original C5 shifter boot and didn't have to do anything to it to make it work with the C6 shifter.
As far as I know the shifter boxes are all the same with the exception of the earlier Z boxes having the steel bushings as was mentioned in an earlier post. If your car is relatively low mile you can re-use your shifter box and just change the shifter itself. I changed mine since my car has a few miles on it. I bought my entire assembly on the Forum from another member. You'll see the used ones quite often in the for sale section. Most C6s don't have too many miles on them yet so getting a used one is pretty much as good as new....IMHO.
Good luck!!
i have the RSD snap shifter in my FRC, and it's a complete '09 C6Z shift assembly with a shorter stick. i really like it. the only thing is that sometimes, you have to give it a little more effort to downshift into second
