Well, it finally happened. I was going to a cruise-in here locally, (spent 2.5 hours zainoing my car before hand) and here comes the rain. Thinking it will end soon (according to the local weather people :mad ) I went ahead and met with some other vetters from our club to go as a group. As it turned out, it ended up being a turd-floater! I mean running water down the side streets 6 inches+ . I told myself I would never be stupid enough to try to go through that much water. I did  ( It didn't look that deep). Fortunately, I made it through the "river" before she died on me. I let it sit for a couple of minutes before trying to start it. It started but it sputtered for a while before it finally cleared out. One thing you DON'T want to do and that is rev 'er up to high rpm. I at least had a little common sense on that. Fortunately, everything turned out alright. I've driven this vortex vette through all sorts of rain storms without any problems. I can definitely say now from experience, Vortex or any other bottom breather setup is not to be driven in anything over 4 inches deep (and I was just pulling out of a driveway at a crawl). The vette behind me said the water was up to the center of my wheel. As it turned out, they called off the cruise-in. Oh well.....live and learn! I'm just glad the gods decided it wasn't time to make me buy a new motor yet
If you did injest any water you should consider changing your oil and filter IMHO... We all learn from our mistakes but it could of been much, much worse for you :yesnod:
Just glad I left the factory intake in place and added a Z06 lid. I don't think the extended warranty will cover that sort of damage. Glad you didn't hydro lock the engine that could have expensive all for a few more HP.
I have an '01 LS1 with a Vortex and have a fear of hydrolock due to the violent T-storms around here. I believe the main cause is the chin spoiler which above 30 mph is designed to bring air to the radiator and also feed the vortex.
Even at low speeds, if deep water hits that chin spoiler it acts as a scoop, inadvertently feeds the air filter water, causing hydrolock.
I'm hoping to somehow develop a temporary flap/seal if I am stuck in heavy rains...

Couple of things to mention tho. Even if ones car ingests water with the stock airbox, it will not be covered under warranty. With water up to the center of your wheel well thats highly likely even with the stock air box.
I like the vortex because it sets up high like the stock box. I wouldnt consider it a "bottom feeder" like other products I've seen.

Holy  Man Mike at least no pemanent damage was done! What part of Joplin were you in?

Tom
Yup yup. NO warranty covers hydrolock.
I believe insurance will cover it. I know many people in the Houston area who have had all sorts of flood damage to their vehicles covered, including new engines. If something has changed, I'd like to hear from someone in the insurance business.
Re: DROWNED MY VORTEX THIS EVENING!!! (jschindler)
This type of loss IS covered under your comprehensive coverage. You would have to pay your deductible. (I'm in the insurance business). It would be considered loss due to flooding, which is a covered comprehensive peril.

2000^C5, sorry, but I disagree. If you read your policy you will see that modifications are not expressed as exclusions. Having been in this business 20 years I have seen it all..including bottom breathers that sucked water and ruined an engine. It was (and still is) replaced under comprehensive coverage. The policy language lists the perils that are covered as well as what's excluded (racing for example) If it's not excluded, and fits a covered peril, it's covered.
One final note on this that may be of interest to all concerned.(At least those of us with bottom breathers) If this ever (God forbid) happens to me, I will NOT attempt to restart the car. Instead, I will have it towed in and dealt with by a professional. The reason I will do that is that your policy affords coverage for expenses you incur to prevent further damage to covered property. This coverage is in place to reimburse you fully without deductible under the assumption that the cost will be less than paying for additional damage that might occur. (think of it as if you lost part of your roof, and bought a tarp to cover the hole, your action prevented further loss..therefore the cost of the tarp would be paid). Comprehensive coverage (in a nutshell) is anything that can damage your vehicle OTHER than a collision, thus it is a valuable coverage. Things not covered are specifically listed in the policy under "Conditions and Exclusions". I hope this information is useful, and any of you that might want further detail should email me.
