I was driving home on a rural highway yesterday, cruise control on and set @ 65mph and noticed a squirrel standing on the double-yellow line. I anticipated that he was going to wait until the last second to make the mad dash across my path. Since I was anticipating his move, my reaction time was minimal.
I guessed right. I got maybe 35'-40' from him and he made his move across my path. I made a hard right, then hard left, then hard right back to my original line of travel. I would guess this all happened within 1 second. Between the hard left and the second hard right, I heard a little tire squeal, cruise control clicked off, Active Handling lit up on the DIC. A/H performed flawlessly. No loss of control whatsoever. I then looked back to see if I missed him, and I did, but I could swear I saw him High-Fiving his buddy along the side of the road. :D
As and added note, about five miles further down the road another one of his buddies tried it, darting across from the right side of the road. Only this time I didn't see him until it was too late, no time to react. I staddled him and and didn't feel or hear a thump. I looked in the mirror and saw he didn't make it. I think maybe the spoiler must've got him. Oh, well. :cry
Which road was it on? I haven't had dinner yet. BTW, is there a good review available by a race car driver on the value of active handling? Would Mario go for it?
Sounds like today's Kindler gentler Army. It's a good thing theirs still soldiers like me who would of flattened the dam thing. If it takes active handling to miss a squirrel, it's not worth it. Dead squirrel!!!! :flag
I was just passing on an incident that that involved A/H kicking in. I wouldn't have tried it if I didn't think I could've done it and not made it. Just ask the second squirrel.
I've done this manuever a couple of times before on the race track, so I did have the confidence. :yesnod:
The Vette is a very nice handling automobile.
"country rats"!!!!! hate em!!!! Got up under my friends car cover and munched on the rear deck of his 99 cp.!!! :mad They do make a nice soup or and appetizer, buffalo squirrel and a cold beer.
