i have been reading alot of threads on exhuast and for the most part people are doing it for sound not hp. I want to upgrade my exhuast on my c5 but a 1,000 for sound seems a bit much to me. what can i excpect to gain with a aftermarket exhuast say corsa or bb triflo 8-10 rwhp or is it more in the 4-5 rwhp range. thanks
Any cat-back exhaust is probably worth no more than 5 to 10 HP MAX it's ear candy. Just like chrome wheels, painted brake calipers and all those great looking engine bays are eye candy. If it makes you feel good that's what counts. At least with the exhaust the LS1 sounds like a VETTE not a Cadilac.
I put an aftermarket exhaust on almost every performance car I've ever owned. The only one that ever seemed to gain any power at all was my '96 Vette when I put on a Power Effects exhaust. As mentioned, they're mostly just for sound. But even if you only gain 5 horsepower, it all adds up.
Installing a cat back exhaust system is a great start but certainly NOT the answer to your question. Yes, the aftermarket systems can reduce backpressure and enhance the tone but much more will have to be considered for a truly "tuned" exhaust system.
I'm a firm believer in getting the air "IN" as fast and as cold as possible AND getting the exhaust "OUT" as quickly and unobstructed as possible. I've had very good luck with my car with this in mind. If you want to start with the exhaust ..that's fine . You will need to install a set of quality headers and an x-pipe and most importantly....PULL the cats or at the very least replace them with hi flow cats by Random Technologies. They are DEAD and RESTRICTIVE weight(32lbs.) A real waste of FREE H.P. and TQ.!!
I achieved nearly 30 rwh.p and 29 lbs of rwtorque just from bolt on exhaust and intake modifications.
You can check out my homepage for install pics and info on my full exhaust system and the link below will let you hear them on the video. It sounds alot better in person but you will get the idea..:D http://www.badazcorvettes.com/~vstella/video/ARE226.mpg
