Default Question about Cams...

I'm not quite ready to drop $6-$10k for heads and cams but from what i've seen you can get just a cam for about $400?

What are the reported power gains from just a cam?

I heard that labor is not that much?

Is this what causes the "lumpy" idle?

Thanks in advance,

Frank

Sure a camshaft alone is around $400, but then you have to also do valvesprings and pushrods which add up to about another $300, and then usually $600-1000 for install depending on shop. Also, to get real good power out of a cam-only installation, you will also have to get some sort of PCM programming done, or at minimum a $300 Hypertech Programmer to raise the Rev Limiter of your car. Also, to get the true 20-30rwhp gains from a camshaft, you also need a set of Long Tube headers which start around $900 for the lowest cost ones.

There are a lot of factors that go into camshaft seleciton as well, A4 or M6 car? Does it have to pass emissions? Do you mind a bit of a lumpy idle?

I know how you feel :yesnod: After all my research I ended up wih a great package by ARE(Agostino Racing Engines) They have a great bang for the buck head and cam deal for the budget minded and I gained over 45 RWHP and 20 RWT with this "Street Eliminator" package on my 2001 Coupe.

You get a set of competition heads Ported and polished intake and exhaust with NEW stock size valves, NEW Compcam 918 springs, retainers and seal, pushrods.for $1650......That's a value ,believe me!!:yesnod:

Listen to the results  http://www.badazcorvettes.com/~vstella/video/ARE226.mpg

I looked at ARE's web site and did not see any information about their "Street Eliminator" package , do you have some information you could share?
Thanks

Mike Norris at Norris Motorsports tells me that a cam (Comp 216/220, 114) w/springs, retainers, plus installation will cost me $1500. He believes I would get an incremntal gain of 20 to 30 hp on my FRC that already has a Donaldson, ported maf, ported tb.

I have the same problem. Don't have the deep pockets to drop 7 or 8 large at one time. I have asked for his suggestion on how to build up to a comprehensive system (H&C, headers, exhaust, pulley, ls6 intake) by spending $2k every so often till I get there.
