Default Yet another Temp Question thread...

So I have been reading all the threads about oil, coolant and trans Temps. I still would like some opinons on my situation please.

I'm a new vette owner and quite honestly I have never worried about temps on my other car nor did I have such easy access to the temps on my other cars. so....

Today I travelled across TX. It's was about 80ish outside. All interstate driving. 70-80mph.

While driving:
Oil temp was around 215-219
Coolant Temp was around 198-204
Trans Temp was around 200-205

When I stopped at various gas stations:
Oil temp was around 224-230
Coolant Temp was around 210-215
Trans Temp was around 210-215

Is this normal? I'm still a little unclear on what the normal ranges should be in those conditions.

As far and checking and maint on these items I'm a little fuzzy on what I should check/clean based on which temp is giving me an issue. Even if the temps are within range I would still like to know what to look for in the future. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Also, what is being monitored on the HUD? I see the oil icon but I'm unclear if its pressure or temp. While driving mine toggles between 4 and 5 bars often.

.

Those numbers look about right for a stock thermostat. I don't have HUD so I don't know about that. Oil, coolant, trans fluid should all be changed at least as often as recommended. I change mine a little more often. All basic maintenance.

Your HUD displays oil pressure and your temps look perfect assuming you're running a stock T-stat and fan on/off temps.

Those are pretty much exactly what mine were before the 160 stat and fan on setting change. Now I get 170ish while moving and so far not higher than 182 while sitting.

So based on the other threads I have read I looked under my front bumper and checked my radiator. It does have some pebles, etc. There isn't a whole lot but I still want to clean it out. I read that you use a water or air hose and clean it from the other side. I'm not sure how to get to the other side to do this though. any advise?

The best way to clean out the garbage and debris from the radiator and AC condensor is with compressed air. Blow it out in the reverse direction from normal air flow. Found this 90 Deg long nose nozzle that makes the job much easier.

Remove the top plastic cover on the radiator and condensor and use this tool. You will be amazed at the huge amount of crap that is caught in the fins - especially the condensor. Your temps are not out of line, but they will drop after a thorough cleaning.

Those temps are normal for stock-- The stock temp setting for athe coolant overheated condition/ check engine lite varies between 230-265*
The trans overtemp is very high like 266*
You have to remember the trans is cooled by the radiator !!! So if your radiator is cooler--your trans will be too
I would ist start with installing a 160 coolant thermo--this will bring down the temps of both the rad and the trans--BUT if you don't have the fans adjusted to accomodate the lower thermo you won't be doing much as the fans in stock trim don't come on til #1 -226* and #2-235*---inbelieveable !way too late ! I would set the new temps as such with a 160 #1 on at 200/0ff at 190
#2 on at 210/0ff at 201
If your car is stockish with bolt ons this will be all you need to do
If you have internal mods or stall converter or run the car hard alot--many people will BYPASS the trans rad. cooler--and even someimes install a separate new trans cooler on your shroud--By bypassing the rad. ttrans cooler the fluid won't heat up as the raditor gets hotter--GM does it this way for very cold areas where they actualy want the trans fluid to warm up some--But just common sese driiving in the cold by letting it warm up well does the same thing--

PS The trans industry reccomends that any temp over 200* for an extended time " will shorten its life"
