Default AIR PUMP Problems

So the story is one we have all heard before regarding the dreaded P0410 code. I've been through thread after thread but can't find the answer in the direction that my problem solving has taken me. For the Record, 1999 Coupe.

So my car threw the code. First thing I did was reset the code and make sure it was for real which it did reappear. Next, I broke the air line by the alternator then cranked from a cold start to listen for the hum, which I thought I heard but felt no air from the hose.

I shut down, checked the fuse and relay which appeared fine.

My questions are:

Are there any other things that would cause the AIR PUMP not to function that I can check?

Do these things normally go bad? (I ask cause the other threads don't really go into the AIR PUMP itself, just the Ports or whatever.)

Is there a way to check the old pump out of the car for functionality?

I normally wouldn't care being that it doesn't effect the function of the car, but I just moved to NC and they will ding me for this on inspections, or so I have heard.

I just wanted to do a little more background research before I spring for the $100 new AIR PUMP and find out that the pump wasn't bad.

Ok, so I was able to check the pump more closely, and the pump is running but no air is coming out. Looks like I am going to have to spring for the new one. Thanks for the info!!

I'm in Calif where our smog laws are the toughest in the nation-- I have my A.I.R. pumps turned OFF--unplugged as well on the pump-AND have all the related codes and readiness tests deleted-The early
97-00's are known for pesky air codes-- If the pump is very expensive as I suspect and sorting out the root cause of it not working may be difficult--I would just turn it OFF---AND my car passses Calif emmision easily on the sniffer and rollers--All the AIR related components are still connected so visibly they don't suspect anything----
These cars run very clean---The AIR pump only comes on briefly when starting up cold -- so when they are running the smog test it NEVER comes on anyway cause it's warmed up---They know this and don't check to see if its running or working
The reason for the AIR pump is to inject cold air into your exhaust to help light off the cats when cold-after its warm--they remain lit anyway- Just make sure when getting it smogged you warm up the cats by driving it around and warm it up thoroughly- Any tuner can do this for you with EFILIVE or HP but not ANY handheld----

Finally after a string of bad weather and the "honey do" list running long I was able to get back under the hood and turns out it was the #40 micro relay. I had checked the other "AIR PUMP" relay but didn't check that one out. Switched it out with the FOG LAMP relay and now it pumps plenty of air. Glad you saved me from that $125 Air Pump. A $7 relay is much nicer.

Thanks lucky131969!!!
