Default blown tranny?

i posted in general and they said this was the place

sorry for posting twice

here is the story:

Well - today i blew up either the tranny (M6) or the diff or both

going from first to second to third all at 5000 rpm

(foot off gas during shift)

upon letting the cluch out once in third, grind grind grind

i am almost sure i did not miss the gear or the cluch

the motor has dyno at 450 hp at rear wheels so it is built and the rear was built to 390

fluid everywhere brown smelling like motor oil

it rolled ok in neutral and after stopping, i put in first and it would start to go but then grind grind grind

fluid all over the bottom of the car

not sure if it matters but just changed the oil and the mechanic said he added a quart of tranny fluid - i confirmed it was dex III atf and it was

it is now on a flat bed heading to the tranny shop that my fishing bud owns

thoughts would be much appreciated.

thanks

i guess my question is if the tranny fluid was overfilled, would that cause the issue

my gut tells my that the motor is overbuilt and the tranny was not and this was bound to happen

61k on car and 26k since mike norris did the motor work in 2005

car is a 2001

Whatever you do, don't let a "transmission shop" do the work other than labor. The rebuild of the trans' and diffs in the vettes isn't the kinda job for the average joe.

thanks for the info

some dumb questions:

with a built motor and a stock tranny and getting on it, i assume this was bound to happen. could overfilling the trans fluid cause a problem?

what type of transmission should i get from rpm? would a z06 fit?
should i get something better than stock?

the guy's shop i am sending it to has been in business locally for over 20 years and he used to be into building racing trannys back in the day so i assume he will not take on something over his head but i will discuss with him - thanks for the tip

finally, how much should i expect to pay and for what?

i guess once he looks at it he can tell me more but if i need a new tranny and diff what should i get?

thanks for any advice and sorry for the dumb questions

In all honesty 450 isn't a ton of power for the stock tranny. I ran around on 487 to the wheels for a long time with no problems from the tranny. Launching at the track is a different story but I would say it should have handeled it on the street. There are a lot of guys pushing 600 plus on the stock tranny with no problems. But I guess anything can happen.

If it's a 6speed, how could you overfill it? If it's an auto, thats a possibility, but a Z06 trans wouldn't work because they only have 6 speeds.

You could do a Z06 trans in a 6speed coupe/frc, but the gearing is different. First gear is shorter, making for better launching, but less top end.(if you care about that)

If it's a 6 speed, a stage IV should be just fine from RPM. I believe they're about $1800 plus your core. Expect 500-1000 dollars for an install.

If it's an auto, get the most expensive one you can afford.

Also, just because someone has been in business for 20 years and has built race transmissions, doesn't mean they can work on the T56's, 4L60E's, and IRS differentials. I have seen personally, and heard of WAY too many people getting transmissions built by local race shops and breaking them after a couple months. Their price may look better at the beginning, but with the price of the RPM you are paying for years of perfection and the relaxing feeling knowing you will have a piece that will hold up.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

thanks again

not a mechanic and vettes seem to be special creatures so i did not know if the M6 would have problems if overfilled or even could be overfilled. thanks for the answer that it was not the issue.

makes me feel better (in a weird way) that it was indeed me and not my mechanic who did the oil change and topped off the trans fluid.

i agree about the comment on the corner tranny shop

sounds like the plan is to contact RPM - i will call them monday

i assume my local tranny guy will be able to tell me if the diff is ok and be able to install the tranny from RPM

this forum is great and the people seem to be good folks in general

i assume that is because they are corvette people

You do know that, if you break a differential output shaft, it will have those symptoms. Jack the rear of the car up. Hold the passengers side wheel still. Have someone turn the drivers side wheel. If it turns freely (it should NOT turn freely) you broke something in the rear. Most likely the output shaft.

Thats a WHOLE LOT less money than a new tranny.

Here are TWO excellent post you need. Even if it is just a tranny issue, you still should up-grade the rear-end. I just did mine.

- C5, Its Go Time, Output Shaft Install - Left and Right : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...post1573404441

- C5 RAGTOPWS6, Differential UP-Grade; http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...-z06-guts.html

Please do not let some shop that is NOT familiar with C5/C6 T-56 trans or C5/C6 differentials talk you into a rebuild.

That is great information. I did not know that.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this and post the threads.
