Assuming that everything is tight in the dash, you may just be having a problem with "burned" cd's. Try a new(er) "store-bought" one and see how that does.
Secondly, you may get some remedy with one of those CD Lens Cleaners you can purchse. They consisit of a disc with tiny little brushes, some liquid cleaner and instructions. I have gotten some temporary relief on several of my players using this method. They are pretty inexpesive so it is worth a shot.
Playing store bought CD's plays fine with no skips. Playing my own burned CD's is another story. It seems the player doesn't like burned CDR's and plays fine when you first start to drive but seems to skip terribly when the radio gets hot, usually when you have your lights on. Thats my experience, you may just have a bad or dirty lens in your player if it happens with store bought CD's. I thought I was the only one having problems with CDR's, I don't feel so bad now. Eventually going to change out the head unit with a double din nav unit anyway.
Factory single disk unit and you are right, only does it with burnt disks. Is there an input for iPods? Don't see one. If not how difficult are they to install? Have thousands of songs on my iPhone, it would be great to able to use it in the vette.

Easy fix...
I wrote a procedure on my web site.
It worked for me. Mine would skip, not read most CD's etc...
Save yourself some cash for sure.
Mine reads ANY CD now perfectly like new.. burnt and store bought.

Good Luck
I had issues with burnt CD's at first... then store bought CD's would not work.
I tried every head cleaner on the market until I did my fix above. Nothing else worked.
Change your brand of CD's. Don't use CD R's that can be rewritten, player was not designed for them..............Matter of fact, most players that don't record don't have the more powerful laser to accurately read the rewritable disks........
