2002 Coupe with 60k. About a month ago car would not start when warm/hot every one in while. Just kept trying until it did start. Can take up to 20 times to go. Problem has gotten worse to not starting almost anytime hot or cold. I have done some searching and feel it is most likely the starter solenoid because:
1) No codes
2) 12.47 volts at start
3) When attempting to start everything clicks per described in previous threads in the passenger foot panel and no secuirty light
4) I followed the advice (Thanks Bill Curlee+others) and found where the solenoid is and made a 3 foot stick and gave it a few whacks thru the headers. The car started right up the first and second time after doing this. It is possible this would have happened anyway, but it hasn't started on the first try in the last 10 attempts now....so feeling good about the diagnosis.
I know I am skipping a few troubleshooting steps, but at this point, I am willing to take the chance and I am just going to have it replaced. (Sounds like it will go eventually anyway...) Given just solenoids are difficult to source apart from a starter, I am looking at full starter replacements. Any thoughts out there on which to pick? There are remanufactured units from the major chains for $170 or so plus a core ~$30. Then there is a new one from Bosch for about $140, no core. Any reason not to go with the new Bosch?
I have XSPower LT headers on the car. I do not have the skills or time to do the replacement myself. With the long tube headers is the shop going to have to remove the passenger side exhaust completely to get to the starter? Seen threads that with the stock exhaust you can just remove the H section. But with the LT headers the first connection is actually under the car where the tunnel plate starts..Thoughts on what they are up against here and how much lighter my wallet is going to fell? Painful as I should have replaced this when I did the headers last summer..
When I looked down there last night it appeared there was good clearance on the headers when compared to the starter/solenoid. But I do plan to put some type of wrap around it when replacing just in case. THanks for the heads up.

Thanks in advance for any advice
Unfortunately, until you take voltage measurements at the solenoid, and inspet the wiring........you are just guessing.

Sure....but can't we at least call it an educated guess? 3/3 on starts today after giving the solenoid a whack last night. Is that consistent with what others have experienced?
Also would love any thoughts on the Bosch starter. For my 04 Denali that forum really discouraged their use of their 02 sensors. But when searching starters lots of posts from various forums that state basically "Can't go wrong with Bosch....good name". Anyone use their starter in a C5?

I just picked up my Bosch Starter today and will install it tomorrow, I'll let you know how it does.
I installed it and it started right up. But my problem was from me driving it for a while. I will post back when I get a chance to drive her for a while. Its real nasty weather right now so I should get a chance to drive her soon.
Ok finally had a chance to drive for a long period of time. Well the same thing is still happening. The new starter didnt fix it. Not sure what it is, hopefully I'll get sometime soon and start figuring this crap out. I was stuck for about 10 mins, wouldnt start, then it finally did. Anybody else with suggestions????
Troubleshoot. There are soo many no start threads, complete with schematics that either Bill or I have posted, procedures, etc. Do some reading and grab your meter.
