I got this code while driving today my question is, i've read here that it is a air check valve issue, but my engine check light came on after driving it for about 15 mins on the highway. I thought the air pump only comes on at engine warm up, btw gonna do the cleaning of those valves when we get some sunny weather, per Bill C's directions...

The PCM does not turn on the MIL light, until the check valve has failed two consecutive igniton cycles. I get a P1416 about once a year, and it always triggers the MIL when I'm driving.
ok makes sense, drove to work w/ no light, drove home light came on so that 2 ignition cycles, so problaby due for a cleaning on the check valves? I ask that becuse it happened a few months back. And thank you for your input
Cleaning the A.I.R. check valve will only provide a temporary fix for this issue. The real problem with the check valve is it's internal rubber diaphragm. Over time, it becomes hard and restricts air flow through the valve.
During each engine warm-up cycle, the PCM checks the A.I.R. system operation by monitoring the output of the front O2 sensors when the A.I.R. pump is running. The first test failure will result in a history code being set, and the next successive test failure, as lucky pointed out, will turn on the MIL.
The only long term fix for this issue is either replacing the check valve, or programming the PCM to ignore Secondary Air parameters.
This thread link will tell you all you will ever need to know about the subject. Bill Curlee posted some pics (post #79) of the defective bank 2 check valve, from my '01, that he took apart for inspection.
