Default Man I was LUCKY!!

I had to put in a new clutch into my C5 and I decided to change the TQ tube bushings. I have 85k miles. Im really glad I did, I couldnt imagine what would of happened if i was at the track full throttle and these bushings came apart!! Thanks to Chris at ECS for hooking me up with a RPS Twin Disc clutch and the TQ Bushings! I HIGHLY recommend doing this when doing a clutch install. I went with a stock GM bushing up front and a ECS aluminum bushing in the rear. Heres the pics of the old TQ bushings

I changed a friends bushings and he ad 80k miles, his car wouldnt move because the front bushing was a pile of dust. Thats what made me change them.

what made you go with the aluminum in the rear over say the poly ones that are available? I ask because I am considering replacing both of mine with poly's when I do my clutch too

Thats what ive read on here, they say thats the best combo. Cant remember exactly why, you can call Chris at ECS and he can explain all of it to you. Sorry I wasn't much help.

Okay, I will bite here......what makes them deteriorate like that? Even under hard usage I cannot imagine that much degradation of that part.

Answers please?

Being 11 or 12 years old might also be a contributing factor-they degrade with age, just like tires.

I agree with age and how you drive it. Moisture may have something to do to it too, and My car makes some good power so that may have something to do with it too.

ABSOLUTELY. I had 125K miles when I changed mine, to be honest they didn't look very bad at all. No large cracks or anything at all.
Compared to how the ones look in this picture, mine probably had another 40K miles on em'.

Now my car is a 2.73 auto, never really been down the strip..never autocrossed. Just basically a daily driver with the occasional blast for fun.
Never had slicks or even R compound tires.
And I don't hammer it from a dead stop or through a ton of gear changes, for example..if I'm just having fun, I'll hit it from 55-60ish mph instead of 70-75mph to blast to 120 or whatever...it's a lot easier on parts than slamming it into 2nd gear @ 5000 rpm to take off on the highway. No powerbraking to take off, I won't even just FLOOR it(from a dead stop) if I don't need to...just roll on to full throttle very quickly.

If you're on the strip or going for lap times, it tears OEM parts up

No really, these wear more like U joints than tires...the little metal "collars" really seem to hold things together.

I don't think I've seen many (if even one) member here that has actually had one straight up let go and leave him/her stranded.

I had one experience with a friend of mine left him stranded, he had it towed to my house so I can fix it. The front bushing was a pile of dust and the output shaft was just wobbling around. I think having a auto wouldnt have that much stress on the bushing vs a 6 speed.

Yup! Mine weren't quite that bad but they would have been soon. I'm replacing them again with the RPM poly bushing when Rick - Ragtop = does the level 5 tranny and goes through the rear with C6Z stuff.

I think power level, age, heat and how you drive has a lot to do with how long they last.

The bolts and the hard bushings molded into the couplers overlap. There are also large pins that centers the drive shaft at each end. So, I'd like to see pictures of a coupler that came apart enough the car would not drive without damaging anything else.

I did have some vibs before I did the clutch install, figured it was the clutch, but I guess the bushings had something to do with it

I wished I had the pics still of my friends bushing that was a pile of dust. He was very lucky he was just driving it around, and not beating on it. As soon as he felt the car not moving and reving up he quickly pulled over and shut it down. I inspected the shaft and everything too, when I reinstalled everything it drove great and he said the vibration went away too.
