Default A VERY Quick ported TB question...

I get my Zo6 intake put on this Friday. This is about the last upgrade I can do without stroking the motor. My tuner swears up and down that there is no gain from porting a throttle body and that it is a total was of time and money. If it is worth while Friday would be the time to do it with the new intake. I need the Pro's and Con's of this mod and does it realy make that big of a difference. Lots of comments please.

I spoke with Russ Collins of RC Fuel Injection.I wanted to port my TB and HE stated on the Vettes, the throttle body is fine the way it is.No porting necessary. He drives a Vette himself,so he should know if there was any increase in performance. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy

Thank-you Rod, but I do have a question to anyone reading this...There are certainly more knowledgable people on this forum than myself and MANY of them have done this mod. Why then? Does it increase the speed or way the air is brought into the manifold? Once again my tuner is VERY reputable in my area and swears this is a BS mod. If this is true, then why do many supporting tuners on this forum sell and/or port throttle bodies? I need alot of input by tomarrow to make an educated decission on this. Come on where are all the experts who love to argue?

I did mine and I think it helped at part throttle. The lip inside seems to direct the air right at the throttle blade. I smoothed this out. As far as total air flow at WOT? I think the stock one is sufficient.

Nitro, hi there,

I am really not sure, if I am to consider as a "knowledgeable" contributor to your inquiry :) . Nonetheless, let me give you that what I have actually in my "mentally driven Data Base".

I am on a comparable Mods-routeing as you are, exc. Heads/Cam for the moment. But looking the totally modified Cold-Air Intake-Section I carry on my C5 (this is the ever so awesome and powerful MTI RamAir SetUp, plus a GMS MAFS), I was as well to get any of those ported TB-solutions offered by some of the Tuners here around.

To collect more basic informations, I personally discussed this subject to Mr. Jayson at MTI/HOUSTON and his answer was truly astonishing:

>>>>>......instead to sell me quickly a ported TB for some USD 350, I insisted to absolutely have one of those, he, Jayson himself, was to join 100% the opinion of your Tuner you mentioned => ........total waste of money.....waste of time.......and very little to zero gain.......OEM TB "as is" largely good enough, unless you really go STROKER, higher than 388!!!!

Now that is surely serious and correct Customer oriented Business and therefore one big point more I really like not only their RamAir ColdAir Intake System, but to continue to totally trust to MTI in HOUSTON - Jayson as the Owner of this Business.

So my little NBM-Racer continues for the time to breath non-stroked but powerfully through his ordinary OEM TB and I was to save some $$$$$ for other more important stuff.

BUT: the only stupidly agonizing problematic I still carry around in my brain's deepest backyards is the never ending argument of: ......every little BIT helps.........you know......:blueangel: .......so do what ever you like, Brother.

Hope my enlarged comment was of some help to your decision.

Joe. :seeya

You will find tuners on both sides of the fence on this upgrade but most claim an increase. After reading their posts and having personally discussions with a few of them, the most impact on vehicles are those that have upgraded by having heads & cam done and the increases range from 3-5 HP at the upper end of the power band. Still others claim a more responsive throttle when done. Either way it does helps in airflow to a certain degree. I have done it although have not dyno’d my vette since…

Nitro,

I had a ported BBk TB and a GMS MAF before I did my H/C and it seemed to be more responsive.
But when we did the H/C ,My tuner told me we were better off with the OEM TB.For some reason the PCM after being reprogrammed wanted the stock TB and MAF.It just liked the Stock better than the BBK and the GMS.I cannot complain it is making great #'s and has not thrown a code yet.

I have a ported throttlebody and had it even before H/C. See sig for mods. Cartek never mentioned it was/would be a problem and so on it remained.

I believe with a return of your stock one as core you would pay under $300 for this mod.

I went a step further and bought a polished one for shows from Halltec for an additional $100.

Even if it does NOT help in the performance department is looks much better than aluminum grey sitting in the middle of all of my other underhood chrome/color.

I say go for it. You get different answers from different folks.

Remember to dril the 7/32 hole in the blade if you have one now due to your H/C.

Chuck

I say go ahead and spend the $$ if you think 3-7 extra rwhp is worth $150. I am getting mine ported by Halltech next week.

Hey Nitro,
I have a ported one in my shop right now. Let's settle this once and for all. I will send it to you free of charge. The only thing you pay for is shipping. If you make power, you can pay $100. If you make nothing, send it back...no harm, no foul.
Let me know if you want it.
Thanks,

Chris,
Thanks brother that sounds like a great opportunity. Only one problem the new intake goes on this friday and when I'm making more power (which I will be) i won't really know how much is from the TB. While the computer relearns this will not be a good time to see how much to gain from an upgrade that small. Too be fair to you, I cannot currently take you up on your offer :( Once the computer has settled back in I might be wiling to re-evaluate this, however. Thank-you for the opportunity anyway.

Well, a TB is really a 10 minute project, so when you get the urge to find out what these can do, let me know. We will be here. :)

Take a look at the dyno sheet from the company your going to buy a TB from and see where and how much HP & TQ they are getting. Here's what I have found out from testing the ported TB's.
I have been doing some dyno tests on the Corvette TB, and I can tell you this, They are very good stock and it's hard to get any gains from porting them.
I have been able to add 15 to 18 ft. lbs. TQ to the lower and upper RPM ranges (2200 to 4200 and 5500 to 6600) and up to 10 ft. lbs. in the upper range. Peak HP & TQ have been plus 1 to plus 2 so far.
These numbers were from a Z06 with headers and air box.
These small gains were good an extra car and a haf on the street test from a 65 to 150MPH run and throttle response was much better.
Even though the ported TB didn't make but 1 or 2 peak HP & TQ, the car was faster and more fun to drive around town because of the added TQ.

Take Chris up on his offer and try the TB and see if you like it, It's not going to cost you anything if it doesn't work. That's one hell of a deal to pass up!!!
