Default Milling 317 heads...

I have a set of 317 LQ4 heads that I want to install on my 98 C5, I shooting for 64cc on them so I'm trying to figure out how much I need to mill. I'm guessing around .040 ought to get me close. Can anyone verify this?

Also, I'll be running an 02-04 Z06 cam, I know their base circle is approximately .023 smaller, so with a .040 mill, my lifters should be able to soak up the .017" difference if running the stock 7.4" pushrods. I could possibly even go .045" mill and get away with it. My brother once did a .030" mill on his 5.3 and ran his stock PR's with no problem.

Lemme know all ya'lls take on this idea.

I'm sorry, I can't help you with your milling question, but I would recommend going to a bigger cam than a stock Z. If you stay small, it's almost like free horsepower.

Yeah, i'd like to but there's 4 reasons I probably won't. First, I'm on a tight budget, second, its VERY doubtful I can find an aftermarket cam for a hundred bucks or less, third, I don't want a choppy idle for sleeper reasons, and finally, I don't want to rev past 6400rpm cuz of the stock rod bolts. I have lots of camshaft experience, I know its not a very big HP increase, but I was gonna do heads anyway so I figured I'd put a small cam in there while I was at it.

Why 317s and not 243s, which already have a 64cc chamber?

im gonna say ur gonna need to mill around .050 off them. Also I just did a cam in my car and its a total sleeper cam and drives like its stock.

I custom ground a 228/228 116lsa. I have brought the car out and only 2 people noticed I had a cam, and 1 wasnt sure he was like does it have a cam? Im like nope just a corsa catback. Ohh okay haha

But then again if ur on a budget, it adds up quick. I would say slowly buy parts and do it all at once. Once you put that z06 cam in after a month ur gonna want more.

Id also change, lifters to LS7, pushrods to hardened ones, Better springs, LS2 timing chain, new oil pump(melling or ported ls6)

My cam swap said and done was about 1200 doing the work myself

Because I already have a set of 317's. I've had them since before I started to mod my car. A buddy of mine owed me some money so gave me the 317's.

Thanks for the input. I'm well aware that I'm gonna want more after probably a week, but that's gonna happen with a big cam as well LOL. For now and until the car is paid for, its just extreme budget build, with the LS6 cam, I won't need pushrods, lifters, etc. Once the car is paid for (at least 2 yrs) I'll pull the engine out, and do a full build, either forged 346ci or 383ci. For now, I just want it to run good, and be competitive with my buddys around here, high 11's to low 12's, this engine setup, 3.42 gears, and 3600 stall should get me there.

243’s have smaller intake valves and ports. Not sure if you’d loose as much from the bad airflow as you’d gain from better compression
