I was driving my C5 today for the first time in weeks and after doing a hard pull in second I got a very loud and hard vibration/thumping from under the car when I shifted into 3rd. The vibration stayed only when I gave the car gas in gear. I idled it home and only when I gave the car a little bit of gas did the thumping return. Any ideas on what it could be? I was thinking the torque tube broke or something along those lines because the car drove but only when I drove it slow.
I had similar noise a few weeks ago... after inspecting everything and not finding anything wrong with the car, I decided to lift the car and THERE WAS MY PROBLEM one of my wheels was lose the thumping noise was the rim moving and coming lose form the suspension.
exhaust hanger broke on my bullets exhaust fell on the suspension. sounded and felt like the diff blew. also my brothers camaro lost a few ring gear teeth at the strip sounded similar
What kind of help are you looking for? Would you like us to properly diagnose your car's problem without seeing/hearing it based entirely on your description of the problem? Your description leaves many possibilities. The best recommendation anyone can give is for you to get the car up on a rack and have a look.
It could be any number of things. Without troubleshooting it, how would you know the root cause? Could be the torque tube, a problem with the differential or maybe an axle. Get it on a rack and good luck.
If you are driving slow at low rpm's and try to give it gas the engine will struggle and jump around but if your sure thats not the case I would get under there and look around.
Where under the car would you say the noise is coming from?
