My heads and cam package is being installed in the next couple of days. As part of the package I am using a Cloyes adjustable gear set. I was advised to set the adjustable gear set advanced by 2 degrees. Opinions appreciated.
I'd go with their recommendation. They should know what they're talking about if you're using a reputable mechanic/tuner. If you don't do it and you're not happy it's your fault. If you do it and you're not happy it's their fault. Most likely 2 degrees won't make enough difference that you'd ever notice it except on a dyno anyway.
Who is doing the install? How is the cam ground? What is the LSA and ICL of the camshaft. How about the duration also?
What are you looking to do with the car? Will you have an aftermarket rev limiter? Are you looking for the best 1/4 mile time or the best overall street performance?
Throw me some answers to these questions and I can accurately evaluate what you ought to do with the timing gear.
Good Luck,
Chris, thank you for the response. The work is being performed by personal friend/tech at a Chevy dealership. Unfortunateley no "tuners" in my area.
Aftermarket rev limiter set to 6800 and I am looking for best overall "street" performance.
Here are the cam specs:
566 Intake
569 Exhaust
222 @50 Intake
226 @50 Exhaust
114 Lobe
Again thanks for the help. Unfortunately I am a "rookie" and not familiar with the term ICL (maybe intertake center line). If that is the case it is a Comp Cam and the paperwork reads "These specs are for cam installed at 114 Intertake Center Line. I hope this is the correct information.
