Default Sorry - Column Lock Question - Yet Again!

I know there is a sticky on this one but I am having difficulties finding a similar sequence of events. I can’t figure out why GMC put a K harness in place anyway (assuming the lockout ring was removed). Here is my sequence of events:

1) sold my 2007 coupe and bought a 2000 vert automatic last year…12000 miles….sweet
2) parked in the garage in the winter with no battery tender (my bad)
3) my son moved the car a couple of times by fast charging the replacement battery the guy gave me with the car
4) the last time my son attempted to move the car, the fuel shut off
5) message 1st was " remove key, wait 10 secs"
6) tried to remove key but then the message went to service column lock (although the column does not lock)
7) went and got a new battery and charged it overnight...no change
8) went and got a relay to replace 12177235 and they gave me 12177233....reset all codes....put on new battery at 12.9 volts and installed 12177233....no change
9) left relay 12177233 in the car and then disconnected Harness (Tyco 15477384 white). All I did was unplug the two plugs on the Tyco hrness, remov the relay and harness. Then I just plugged the two plugs that used to be attached to the Tyco harness together under the dash
10) Car started with no remove key message or service column lock message. When I shut the car off, the column did not lock. Drove the car a couple of times 30 to 40 miles (I have the car plugged into a battery tender at the end of the night)
I’m assuming my winter battery charge / discharge, etc fried the Tyco relay/harness but who knows? Thoughts on how to proceed? It scares the heck out of me of stories where owners get stranded miles from home. Why did GM need to install a K harness anyway?

Thanks in advance.

Yep, the K-harness is prone to failure. As to why they were installed, this is explained in detail, in the sticky above.

Your car went through one of the GM recalls (your dealer and others can take your VIN and give you a printout that will show what # recall(s) were done).

Recalls varied as to date done and what trans your car had. Sorry, don't remember the details but the info is, or was, here on the Forum in various places.

I may be wrong as I am dealing with an old brain, but seems like your car has had the lock plate removed/modified and harness installed, along with the programmed-in fuel shutoff.

Others more knowledgeable than I will undoubtedly chime in, but I think the general consensus for you at this point would be to install either the new GM K-harness (which I understand has been reliable) or a regular Column Lock Bypass so that you willl not be hit--hopefully-with more column messages/fuel shutoff.

You should make sure no more GM recall "improvements" have been done to your car, by checking down in the passenger footwell for the bypass/splice whatever some cars had done to them. Again, identifying that is covered in several Forum posts but you might have to do some searching. I thought it was covered in the sticky but haven't looked at that in a long while.

Its very difficult to diagnoise and troubleshoot a CL Issue with a questionable battery.

MAKE SURE the battery is FULLY CHARGED and has the correct CCA capability. In other words, have it fully tested at an automove store and if its good,,, reinstall it.

Clean and Torque the cable bolts to 11 FT/LBS

Then see if you still ahve the same issue.
