Default transmission linkage help needed-pic inside

My car was stuck in 5th gear, not able to shift. So i tear the car apart, pull the transmission and 2 pins fell out. So those 2 pins hold the shift linkage to the transmission. My question is there something else that holds the 2 pins together? When i place the pins were there suppose to go they fall down as in the pic. Any ideas? The service manual doesn't help. Am I missing a cotter pin or something?

I can't say for sure. I checked the parts listing (exploded view) and it seems that part of the shift rod comes with the shift rod itself and is not normally serviced separately.
I suspect there may be a sleeve or retainer of some sort that slides over or encloses that "u-joint" and is missing.

If you don't get an answer here over the weekend, e-mail Rodney or TJ at RPM Transmissions and send this pic. They can tell you for sure.

On the C5's those pins are pressed fit. The C6's have 1 pin and 1 roll pin. You have to replace the rod assembly if the pins are loose.

When removing the transmission from the torque tube, the service manual says to tap the pin out of the hole. On the install, it says to reinstall the pin, but i cant figure out what im doin wrong.

The manual is referring to the roll pin which is the hollow pin further toward the transmission from that U-joint. I suspect you have a problem with that joint if the pins are falling out. Are either pins loose or just the one? Depending on the material, tough to tell from the picture, it might be weld able. Looking at the picture it wouldn't be too difficult for a machine shop to make a new piece to replace the part that attaches to the transmission. I would guess that's where the wear occurred as the pins appear to be hardened steel.

Both the pins are loose. The thicker pin with the hole is looser then the horizontal pin

Thats a good idea. If I can't figure it out, then I might have to go that way.

Sounds like the softer metal of the fittings has worn where the harder pins are pressed in. A good welder could build it up and then redrill the wholes for a press fit.

Not sure which would be cheaper but likely the welder would get the job done faster.

Look for aircraft welding services in your local yellow pages. The aircraft guys tend to have the skills for this type of job.

You can TIG weld the pins in place... It doesnt take much. Inexpensive repair. If you clamp the joint, it will tighten it up and them weld it.

Take the pins to a machine shop and have them knurl them. They'll then be slightly oversized and you can press them back in. Use some red Loc-Tite while you're at it.
