Completed a 550 mile round trip yesterday. Entire trip was highway at average of 80 mph in 90*+ weather. Mostly cruising in 6th (when over 65 mph). Coolant was steady at 190* and oil temp was steady at 210* Averaged 30 mpg and the ride was great with the top down.
I checked the oil this morning and it was down approx. 1/4 - 1/3 qt. from the beginning of the trip, (tough to read the darn '01 dipstick). I don't know if this is good or bad  What should I do with this car?
That's not that bad. My '00 used to use close to that on the highway when it was fairly new. Now at 27K miles it isn't burning a drop. LS1's are known to use some oil. Seems like they take awhile to seat in sometimes.
Have you considered letting GM put in new piston rings? I don't like that option and would consider selling the car before letting a non c5 tech grease monkey ripping apart the motor.
That certainly doesn't sound excessive. Especially in light of your average cruising speeds. I had a Mustang that would consume a quart in a little less that 1,000 miles.... Never saw any blue smoke or dips, just the way the motor ran.
I'd keep you car as is. Wait till something drastic is wrong b/4 tearing into the motor... then get a STROKER!! :jester
From what I've read that seems normal. This is a performance engine. My 99 with 15K doesn't use any oil but I hear that is the exception. But I would consider asking the dealer to run an oil consumption test. It's a PITA but well worth the effort since you never know if it'll get worse.
I own a 2001 Corvette coupe that was burning oil at the rate of 1 quart every 1,500 miles. The car has an automatic transmission and is never driven hard and usually ends up in bumper to bumper traffic. The dealer replaced the oil rings less than 1,000 miles ago. The job was supposed to take 3 days and ended up taking 2 weeks.
I filed a BBB\Autoline claim and also gave GM a 10 day lemon law notice. They took the car back in for another 7 days with no effective repairs. The car now runs rough and is leaking and using oil so I am proceeding with the Lemon Law claim. I suggest you do the same since the oil consumptiion problem will only get worse as the car ages.
All 2001 Corvettes were manufactured with defective piston rings and GM should replace the engines but refuses to do so. Most state lemon laws are liberally enforced in favor of consumers. Make GM eat the car rather than passing the problem on to someone else.
:smash:
I've had my 2001 Z06 for over a year now and still no Oil burning problems. I think that as you put more miles on your Vette you will be able to tell better whether you really have a problem or not.
To check my consumption with that silly '01 dipstick, I filled it very slightly over the top hole in the stick. Then I checked every time I drove the car until the oil came just to the middle of the hole on two consecutive days. That was my starting point, then I checked it only occasionally until it got down near the "add" hole, started checking daily again. When the oil got to the middle of the "add" hole I had used exactly 1 quart of Mobil-1 10W-30, whcih took 4,500 mile starting at 17,000.
(Shameless plug): check in the Tech Tips section for my ideas on how to get accurate readings on the '01 dipstick.
Your car is proabably OK, just do an accurate check when you have 10,000 miles on it.
It'll be on the Cross Bronx expressway this weekend..j/k. :D
I really like the car and it runs well. I pulled two plugs and they look clean with no sign of oil or carbon build up so I will probably keep it till I see what the '05 C6 looks like.
