Default key with resitior and one without

When I got my used vette,98 year, It came with one key that has the resister chip in it and a solid metal one. What is the key without a chip for. Also how do you get a replacement key? Thanks

The one without is the Valet key. To get a new key(chipped one) go to the dealer with proof of ownership and a VIN number and they can get you the correct key and cut it for you without having to have the original

The one without the chip will open the door but it will not start the car. It can be used to lock the center dash pocket and the dash pocket.

not that sure about that.

without a chip the key would not start the vehicle so how would that help a valet?

it is a driver door and glove box lock key.

i believe it's just called a Valet key. Commonly used on other cars as well but in our case it doesn't allow the vehicle to be started

The solid metal key is a courtesy key and comes in a plastic pouch with your vin# on it.
The purpose of this key is unique to 97&98 MY only because your remote has a switch on it for passive remote locking of your doors.
If you walk away and the key is in your pocket it will lock the doors when you approach the car it will unlock the doors.
However if you leave the key in the car it will also lock the doors after it no longer senses motion.
This is what the courtesy key is for, it's to be kept in your wallet so you don't have to call a locksmith to get in.

Another way to be able to use both your pilled or unpilled key to start and drive your car --is to have your local tuner turn "OFF" the anti- theft system in your ECM---Simple one-entry fix--however then you will have NO theft control deices--but still be able to lock the doors---I beleive a new pilled key from a dealer is around $250---

you can get a resistor key for way less than that.

You do NOT have to go to a dealer to get a new chipped key made. Measure the resistance of the pellet in the key and match it up to the table below:

VATS #, Resistance in ohms

1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1.13k
6 1.47k
7 1.87k
8 2.37k
9 3.01k
10 3.74k
11 4.75k
12 6.04k
13 7.50k
14 9.53k
15 11.80k

Once you know the key number associated with the resistance in the pellet of your key you can go to the big auction site and search for VATS key. There are many sites selling blank keys for the C5. I went with one that cost about $12 and $2.50 shipping. Once I got the key blank I took my current key and the blank to a Lock Smith (I would not trust the cutting to the local Home Cheapo or Lowes. Cost $250 to have it cut ($1.25 per side) Total cost was under $20 while the local stealer wanted $60.
i can not get my ohm meter to read 523. I can get it to read 526 or 525 is this list just close numbers or are they right on and I am doing some thing wrong. Thanks

I bought one of the resistance I needed on ebay for 9.95 and took it to Lowe's and they cut it for free. Worked great. Even if you can't get it cut free, still less than $15 for the key and cut. It's not a transponder key, it's a resistance pellet.

Default Don't do that go to fleebay

Measure the resistance of the pellet. Fo to FLEEBAY and look up Corvatte VATS keys. Compare the resistance to the chart that many vendors provide. The key is a double sided VATS key. The value will correspond to a key #2 to I believe 15. Purchase the correct VATS key BLANK and have it cut by a locksmith for less than $2.00 (Mine charges $1.50). Shop around as many want to sell you a $10 key for $50 or more.
Forget cutting it at Home Depot as they don't have a clue to what they are doing there. No learning required. The right resistor pellet will start the car.

I still have the one for my 97 that I sold 8 years ago.

As for the poster commenting about getting a tuner to shut off the antitheft in the ECM I am not sure how that works since the ECM doesn't do the antitheft. That is the BCM and the tuner can't touch it.

If the PASS-Key® system detects an open or short to ground when the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the BCM will default to fail enable mode. Fail enable occurs when the proper key resistance is sensed before the open short to ground occurs. Fail enable will illuminate the security indicator lamp and allow the operator to stop and start the vehicle until the problem is corrected. The PASS-Key® system includes the following components:
•
Ignition key

•
Ignition cylinder

•
Body control module (BCM)

•
Theft deterrent relay

•
Powertrain control module (PCM)

•
SECURITY indicator

So you give the car a real good shaking to rattle the fob enough it unlocks the doors.
