Default Strange Noise/Vibration Identification

Hi Guys,

I need some input on a strange noise/vibration I am getting in my '01 coupe (A4) with 94,000 miles.

When I come to a stop (ie: redlight) I am hearing a strange vibration coming from what feels like the driveline and towards the rear of the car. I can also feel a slight thump which is in sync with the vibration being transmitted through the brake pedal. If I let off the brakes and let the car creep forward the vibration/noise almost goes away. It happens mostly when the car is hot.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this is?

Is the thump/vibration occuring when you are stopped or just when you apply brakes to slow down and stop, or both?

From what the OP stated, I believe it is when he is stopped. I have a similar sound/vibration also. Almost like the exhaust may be loose. I haven't had a chance to check it recently. I did read on here about some sort of spring near the exhaust that may be vibrating. I will have to search for the thread.

edit**found it

1) pic of the offending rattle. The springs here rattle against their hangers. You can tell just by shaking the exhaust here and it will sound like a storm door on farm house.

2) Got these springs at lowes for 2 bucks. They are very tight and will be used to hold the two H pipe springs together.

3) You have to unbolt the springs to put the holder spring on.

4) Put the sping on the lowest coil, and hand thread the bolts.

5) Tighten them down to 37lbs, and you will be rattle free.

I ran this car for a few miles and have noticed NONE of the rattles that were there before.

Hope that helps....

Brakes are brand new and working perfectly. I actually had the problem before I changed the brakes. The vibration/thumping feeling is only when I am at a complete stop. It is a constant "rythemic" knocking feeling.

It almost feels like something is caught on the driveshaft and knocking against the body of the car (which I know is not the case). Can I shake the exhaust to test the little retainer springs to see if they are shot?

It is very weird I only get this problem when I am stopped but when I left off the brake pedal and let the car creep it subsides.

Unfortunatley thats what I think the problem is. I am hoping it holds together until the fall when I hope to have the drivetrain down for a TC and 3:73 gears.

My theory is that the coupler is getting weak and when its hot the rubber is deforming and brushing against something causing the vibration/thumping noise.

Has anyone purchased the polyurethane couplers from any of the forum vendors? Any feedback on them would be appreciated. I have read plenty about the BMW, LG aluminum, and stock rubber couplers already but haven't heard much on the poly ones.
