Hi All,
I recently purchased a 98 Convertable and I want to open the back end up but I don't want that awful droan especially since it is a Vert but I need the FLOW. Any suggestions out there??
Thanks in advance.
The ONLY two mufflers/exhaust systems that I have expierenced that will NOT produced DRONE are the OEM ZO6 Ti mufflers and Stainlessworks system.
I had the Ti's on my 98 coupe and they were a bit louder (nothing significant ) but had ZERO DRONE and they do flow very well.
I have a complete Stainless works system on my 02 ZO6. From the headers to the mufflers. Its a 3" exhaust system with X pipe & high flow cats and with a vararam and headers I had NO DRONE.
When I added a big cam and high flow heads, the sound level increased a lot but the drone is very tollerable. Some say,,, "You dont have any drone!!! Its there but just barely!
I appreciate the info but was hoping to hear from some Vert owners to see how loud things got in them as this is my first Vert. Thanks for the video the car looks and sounds great, very impressive.
Be pretty careful with the '98. The early C5's didn't have the 4 cats, and are thus a bit more susceptable to the drone. It is worst at exactly 70 MPH in 6th gear. I have a full stock Z06 system on my 2000 and it actually drones just a bit at 70 when going up an incline.
Basically, it seems that if you want a throaty idle, then you get droan.
Do a search here, think about an Xpipe also. Seems the system most famous for droanlessness is Corsa. But, not very sexy idle either.
Why do Camaros and Mustangs sound so good, and Vettes droan like crazy when you try to duplicate that low rpm sound.

You'll get 100 opinions

It because of the spark plug firing order. IMHO my H/C, A R Headers sound damn good through the Corsa Touring. It a low sexy lope.

Borla straight pipes on my vert and they are very nice.
If you want something quieter though, get a cat-back that uses a straight through 'glass-packed resonator style muffler to minimize drone.
Chamber type mufflers are notorious for resonance.
Hard to know what you want verses what you need. You said "I really need the flow", does this mean you have modded to a point where the stock mufflers are really holding you back or you feel that the stock mufflers are the first place you want to improve performance? Other modifications (cam , headers, cat delete) will contribute to how the catback will react. The Ti's aren't loud but are a bit more noticeable than the stockers, no drone and will keep up with other hp mods. They are usually a good choice unless an increase in sound is the main goal.

If you're goal is increased performance, a catback is a sorry place to start. Catbacks only make it sound better. My favorite for sound is GHLs, and owners say they don't drone. I have a heavily modded motor, and Pace Cars. They aren't quiet anywhere but cruise speed. I prefer GHLs, but bought the Pace Cars because of the Daytona tips, and they were on sale for half price. Stay away from Magnaflows for the drone issue. Beautiful sounding/looking catback, but it does have resonance.
Corsa Pace Car cat backs do not drone but sound nice and aggressive when you get on the throttle. I have Stainless Works LTHs an X pipe and Corsa Pace Car cat backs. Quiet at cruise, loud when you step on it and no drone.
Ruh roah, guess who just ordered a Magnaflow 16732, hopefully the manual trans & otherwise stock car will help to stiffle any drone
The Magnaflow is a great catback, but it will have the low RPM resonance under load. I bought mine used, and then resold it for more than I paid. Great looking and durable. Honestly, I'd still have it, but I wanted the two large oval tip style. And the Magnaflow is pretty quiet, even with mods.
