Sorry if this has been asked. What is this dangling brass thing?

Air bleed valve, lets any bubbles that get trapped under the thermostat escape rather than forming a pocket around the 'stat and limiting its function.

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't supposed to cut it off or anything, before installing the thermostat.

Probably want to mount it so that valve is at 12 o'clock high, where any air bubbles would possibly migrate.

Cool. The gasket around it had a **** that matched an indentation on the housing. The old one was mounted that way, so I just followed suit.

I have refilled with 50/50 and run the car up to temperature with the refill cap open. Let it cool, and now ready to run it with the cap closed.

Very mild, but almost summer morning here. Got all the way to work never exceeding 163 degrees. I have to rev it out of the driveway to get to 50 mph, but the rest of the way is highway. Just cools me all over to see the coolant gauge sitting that low.
