Default help on diagnosing low oil issue

I have noticed on my C5 FI vette that every few months or so (after doing a lot of street pulls) that my low oil indicator comes on and I am low on oil. I have never noticed any oil leaks with the car. I have however noticed that the breather/oil cap on my car seems to be misting oil in the engine compartment. After driving hard there seems to be an oil mist on the engine. I do not have a catch can on my system and I was assuming that I am loosing oil through the breather/cap? The motor was rebuilt last november and only has 3,500 miles on it so far. Could I still be burning oil? If so, how do I find out for sure? Would a compression check of all cylinders show a problem?

A cylinder leak down test might be an idea. If someone had the intake, valve covers, rockers and so on, off the car, some of the bolts need thread sealant on them when putting them back in to insure oil doesn't get into the intake passages. Valve stem seals could be an issue but that oil would go out the exhaust. You might want to pull each plug and check them all for color.
