Time to install a breather on my LS1, and the ones I've seen so far have been the 2-3" tall variety that mount in place of stock oil fill cap.
Problem for me is that it would bung up the hood liner if I go this route. What I'd really like is just a shortened oil fill neck, so I"m curious if anybody's explored this? Other GM parts that might sub in to this fill neck application?

Easy. Remove the fill tube from the valve cover (it has a small "locking" tab you will need to break), drill the required hole on your stock filler cap, install breather of your choice and it will screw directly into your valve cover. There are several small, low profile breather vents out there to chose from and K&N is one of them. Something with a 3/4" tube and a grommet to insert in the hole you drill in the cap would work, or you can buy a factory LS7 oil fill hole cap. It's thin and very low profile and gives you more surface area to work with. Just be sure to break off the small lock tab on it first. It has a o-ring just like a standard cap and will screw directly into the hole just like a regular cap would, but was designed originally to permanently plug the valve cover hole since the LS7s add oil in their oil tanks, not the valve cover.
