My local "Goodwrench Genius" informs me that the "locktite" type substance used on my crank pulley bolts has failed causing the pulley to walk off the crank creating the sqweal I've been experiencing. The really weird part of this is that it happened once before under high revs, causing the belt to walk off the pulley and partially shread itself. That was kinda nasty and resulted in a flatbed trip to GM.
I'm not a mechanic but I know that crank pulleys are torqued pretty high. What's wrong with this picture? A different dealer replaced the oil pump a little over a year ago shortly before the first incident. I think he must have snapped a bolt and these guys are covering up. Is this paranoid thinking on my part? The really frustrating part about this is they have had the car a week to figure this out.
I think a trip over to LS1.com is the next stop. Thanks for your help! :mad
The crank bolt is a stretch bolt and needs to be replaced with each swap of the harmonic. When I did mine, I bought two - one I used to tighten the harmonic into place with and then the other I used to torque and stretch properly.
Dealer finished a weeks worth of work today. New belt, new center pulley bolt, stretched and locktite applied. Started the car in their driveway, squealed exactly the same as the day I drove it in. "These guys are good - NOT"
They did have the nerve to tell me the mechanic and service writer both drove the cars with no observed noise and gave me a half a** wash job.
:bs :cuss
Re: Crank Pulley Problem Update(mill_yel-MR) (mill_yel-MR)
When they replaced mine the dealer checked the runout and found a slight wobble. They replaced the harmonic balancer and pulley and the stretch bolt and pins. BTW no problems since. It's been almost 2 months.:yesnod:
